General Summary:
The Direct Support Professional for the residential program for individuals with mental retardation/ intellectual and developmental disabilities is responsible for assisting individuals to live a self-directed life, assisting with activities of daily living, implementing individual programming, and being responsible for the routine operation of the home while on duty.
Full Time Regular, Full Time Float, Part Time and Zero Scheduled Hours positions available.
Core Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures individuals’ health, safety and welfare, enhances the quality of individuals’ lives, and supports community inclusion.
- Participates in the development and implementation of each individual’s Support Plan.
- Provides supervision as determined in the individuals’ support plans.
- Participates in the implementing of all program plans designed to enhance the individual’s social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and independent living skills.
- Assists individuals in the development of appropriate behavioral, social, money management, housekeeping, hygiene, and other skills necessary to reach their highest level of potential.
- Adheres to Department of Public Welfare Regulatory requirements.
- Administers medication and treatment as permitted under regulations
- Completes and updates all daily, weekly and monthly records, reports, logs, casework notes, administrative paperwork, fiscal reports, and medical records in an accurate, timely, and professional manner.
- Collaborates and cooperates with involved agencies, family members, and other service providers; participates in meetings and provides relevant information.
- Transports individuals in personal and/or company vehicle for community outings or scheduled appointments.
- Responsible for individual’s work related personal and financial transactions.
- Works independently with minimal supervision in field location assignments.
- Ensures that the worksite is safe, comfortable, well maintained, and free from hazards.
- Provides coverage in emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Assesses and documents instructional needs initially and on an ongoing basis.
- Provides support and assistance to individuals in arranging for medical care when responsible to do so and follows health care recommendations.
- Develops and facilitates skills instruction in appropriate setting.
- Utilizes community resources to promote community integration, independence, and interdependence.
- Supervises and/or completes all duties and responsibilities in the daily operation of the residence in the 24 hour daily operation of the home.
- Conducts fire drills and manages emergency situations during assigned work shift.
- Encourages individuals to follow all dietary guidelines as recommended by medical professionals.

- Knowledge of acceptable social, work, and interpersonal behavior.
- Knowledge of basic math.
- Ability to understand and relate to persons with disabilities.
- Ability to learn to identify symptoms associated with mental health diagnosis and to learn to apply interventions when symptoms occur.
- Ability to pass the Department of Public Welfare’s Medication Administration Course and administers medications in compliance with regulation and CSG policy.
- Ability to learn and apply positive methods to modify behavior.
- Ability to maintain information in a confidential manner
- Ability to apply the principles of “Everyday Lives “and Self Determination.
- Ability to observe and assess the needs of individuals.
- Ability to maintain professional and respectful interaction with individual and co-workers.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task work assignments.
- Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.
- Ability to perform first aid/CPR.
- Knowledge and the ability to utilize good listening skills and comprehend verbal instructions given in English.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions written in English.
- Ability to write legibly in English in a clear, concise, and logical manner.
- Ability to speak clearly and express self effectively in English.
- Ability to facilitate groups and/ provide individual skill instruction.
- Knowledge of computers and Microsoft software products.
- Ability to create and foster a home environment that allows for real choices, respect, and the development of meaningful relationships and free from threats, coercion, neglect, and abuse.
- Ability to learn the regulations pertaining to job assignments.
- Ability to learn to operate all equipment (i.e., mechanical lift, feeding pumps, etc.) necessary to meet the needs of the individual.
- Ability to read and comprehend medical orders and prescription.
- Ability to remain awake during all work hours unless designated as sleep time as a part of the schedule.
Minimum Education, Credentials, and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency;
Or
Have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the functions of the position.
Special Requirements:
Must be able to work flexible hours to meet individual’s and program’s needs.
Must have a valid driver’s license, good driving record, and access to a reliable vehicle to attend trainings, meetings, and/or transport individual to appointments.
Must be able to travel to trainings/meetings upon request of program director.
Must be able to drive passenger vans if applicable.
Must be able to accompany individuals into the community and provide support and assistance in interactions in the community while maintaining sensitivity to the rights and dignity of the individual.
Must have the ability to obtain clearances as defined by regulations.
