Purpose of Job
A. Responsible, at a senior level, to provide expert commodity tax (GST/HST/PST and QST) advice to:
i. CIBC Commodity Tax personnel;
ii. CIBC Business units within CIBC and across CIBC subsidiaries and branches; and
iii. Deal with external parties (e.g. CRA and PST auditors, CIBC vendors, etc.)
in dealing appropriately with complex commodity tax issues.
B. To assume the leading role of commodity tax expert with respect to:
The creation, maintenance and adjustment of the CIBC GST ITC Methodologies (the “GST 116 Process”) for:
i. CIBC; and
ii. CIBC WMI;
and where applicable, any relevant changes to GST ITC recoveries for
iii. Other domestic CIBC subsidiaries.
C. To assist Corporate Services and Accounts Payable group deal with commodity tax issues related to audit request and tax compliance issues in respect of:
i. external federal and provincial auditors and CIBC internal audit;
ii. commodity tax reporting/ financial systems, procedures, controls and policies
are appropriate and functioning so that timely, accurate and reliable information is produced.
D. Special Projects as required.
Accountabilities of Position (Key Outcomes and Activities)
1. Responsibility at a senior level to conduct broad-based, self-directed research of complex commodity tax information by monitoring and analyzing commodity tax entries reported and recorded in the CIBC financial systems. The Director, Commodity Tax, Special Projects must ensure that:
i. the available financial data supports the Commodity tax returns;
ii. must be able to work efficiently and effectively with a minimal of supervision;
iii. able to interpret financial data at the transactional level to determine the key trends and/or anomalies;
iv. able to provide turnkey solutions to found problems or issues such that recommendations and corrective actions required result in improved business results and/or addresses identified gaps; and
v. monitors and provides analysis of trends and variances.
2. Participates as one of the key Commodity tax system user experts and ensures that any new systems and or upgrades meet the required policy and standards. Recommends and assists in the development of new/enhanced sales tax reporting systems, policies, procedures and controls to meet user requirements, changing circumstances and existing inefficiencies.
3. Communicates findings of analysis for use by senior and executive management.
• Provide detailed analysis of commodity tax legislation and its application to CIBC specific transactions.
4. Provides analytical, financial accounting and excel spreadsheet modeling expertise to CIBC Commodity Tax group in order for the completion of the CIBC, CIBC WMI and applicable CIBC subsidiary GST returns.
5. Interprets federal and provincial sales tax legislation to assist CIBC business units with any sales tax implications that affect their business.

Requirements:
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
• Superior knowledge of Microsoft excel spreadsheets including modeling, data manipulation, pivot tabling and macro and micro modeling. High working level knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint and a variety of accounting and ERP software packages.
• Post-secondary education in accounting, business and/or a postgraduate degree (MBA).
• Chartered Accountant Designation
• Completed CICA In-depth and Advanced Courses in Commodity Tax, Financial Services and Corporate Transactions.
• An expert knowledge of the financial/management ledger and reporting systems in the Financial Services area.
• Strong analytical and consultative skills.
• Proficiency in analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Expertise in SOX compliance services in the Financial Services area.
• Ability to effectively manage multiple activities of varying complexity while under time constraints.
