Director, Equities Division recruitment

This position offers the candidate an opportunity to work closely with senior individuals at leading investment banks in the European equity markets to help shape policy and develop markets in probably the most challenging financial market environment in a generation.  It is an opportunity to work on the cutting edge of regulatory and market developments whilst still keeping in close contact with the business.

Description of Position

The candidate will be responsible for supporting AFME’s initiatives and projects in the European equities area. The role will involve direct contact with members and policy makers. The candidate will have responsibility for leading committees and working groups related to the work on equities. S/he will also be responsible for research and issue analysis; including data gathering, and fact finding in relation to issues affecting the equities business. The candidate will contribute significantly to AFME’s advocacy efforts including in relation to the MiFID 2 proposals.  Other tasks will include the preparation for meetings, including agendas, meetingminutes, background materials, presentations, project summaries and related information; primary responsibility for maintaining and regularly updating the relevant websites. The role will also involve supporting communications between members, regulators, legislators and the media. The position will also provide an opportunity to assist other AFME divisions and to work with the AFME events and conference team.  This position requires significant direct contact and interaction with AFME’s professional staff and administrative support staff.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate should possess a bachelor's or advanced professional degree.  At least 6-8 years of prior professional work experience in a financial services capital markets organisation is essential, and specific experience in equities markets is highly desirable.   The most important qualifications for this position are strong self-motivation, intellectual curiosity, sharp intellect, sound judgement, and high levels of energy and motivation; an interest in initiating change, well-developed oral and written skills, analytical and interpersonal communications skills; political awareness; organisational skills, potential leadership skills, and the ability to function effectively in a challenging, fast-paced professional team environment. Candidates should be experienced in the use of all standard computer applications.  Fluency in oral and written English is required, and additional European language skills would be a plus. An EU passport or UK work permit is required.

About the Equities Division

The Equities Division monitors, analyses and engages in shaping developments in policy and market structure that affect equities markets. Division initiatives are generated by the members, approved by the relevant Equities committees (Securities Trading Committee and the Equities Board), and carried out by AFME staff working with teams of experts from member firms. Current key issues include EU policy developments (including MiFID, Financial Transaction Tax, Short Selling and other regulations); European market infrastructure developments (including CCP inter operability and exchange ownership of clearing houses) and improvements to quality, cost and availability of market data.

In terms of governance, the Equities Board comprises senior level Member representatives who collectively determine AFME’s overall strategic priorities in relation to policy and business issues affecting the equities markets. The Board provides guidance to the Securities Trading Committee, which is the principal body engaged in detailed equities trading and equities network-related policy development and implementation, in coordination with AFME advocacy staff.
