Mitchell College is a small, private liberal arts college, located in the small suburban city of New London, in southeastern Connecticut, along the scenic Thames River. It offers 3 associate degree programs and 14 baccalaureate degree programs.

A.    Summary purpose

Mitchell College is currently seeking a full-time Director of Campus Safety.  This position has overall responsibility for providing security on campus 24-hours a day, seven days per week.  The Campus Safety office responds to emergencies on campus, patrols the campus on a regular basis, provides community based support for safety and security matters, and protects college property.

B.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·         Establish operational procedures for activities such as traffic control, guarding and patrolling physical property, orienting and monitoring of Campus Safety Officers, investigation of accidents, violations of College policies, and criminal acts.

·         Direct activities of Campus Safety Officers; ensure continual collaboration with all departments at the college.

·         Work as part of the Student Affairs Director Team, and ensure broad representation of campus safety at Student Affairs meetings and functions.

·         Develop and implement training schedules, policies, and procedures. 

·         Coordinate with the President, V.P. of Student Affairs, Director of Human Resources, and department heads on matters pertaining to personnel matters. 

·         Ensure cooperation and coordination of College activities with law enforcement and firefighting agencies, by establishing relationships and coordinating regular meetings. 

·         Supervise and maintain all records connected with Campus Safety including, but not limited to: incident reports, daily logs, and annual crime statistics to the Department of Education.

·         Maintain standard operating procedure manual, and ensure annual review of policies and procedures related to safety on campus.

·         Develop protocols and procedures to manage events on campus, including athletic events, large scale college events, and student activity events.

·         Issue parking permits and oversight of the transportation policy, and parking policy on campus

·         Contribute as a member of Emergency Response Committee and other committees as needed.

·         Continue the development of Community Response Teams, with a focus on building relationships with students on campus.

·         Perform other related duties as assigned.

D.    Reporting Relationships

·         The Director of Campus Safety reports directly to the V.P. for Student Affairs/Dean of Students.

·         The Director of Campus Safety directly supervises all employees in the Campus Safety Department and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with best practices in campus safety, the college’s policies, and campus safety protocol.

·         Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, and assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 

E.      KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field, and a minimum of ten years supervisory experience and fifteen years of public safety experience.  Master’s Degree is preferred, as is substantial experience working with college age students.   

 Language Skills

·         Ability to read, interpret, and create documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

·         Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

·         Ability to clearly communicate in the event of an emergency to students, staff, faculty and public safety officials.   

          Computer Skills

·   Ability to maintain data bases, word processing, and develop and maintain spreadsheets in Microsoft Office software. 

         Reasoning Ability

 

            CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES

Valid driver’s license; C.P.R.; and basic first aid certified.

Excellent Driving Record required
