The University of Wisconsin-Extension Division of Continuing Education, Outreach and E-Learning (CEOEL) is a national leader in providing innovative, engaging, and highly effective online programs and student services. CEOEL staff support fully online associate, bachelor, and masters degree programs offered through the 26 campuses in the University of Wisconsin System. These programs cover many fields including: nursing, sustainable management, professional studies, healthcare information systems, and more.
The instructional design team supporting these programs includes 15 full-time instructional designers and several student workers. The Director of the ID team reports to the associate dean and provides leadership, direction, and supervision to this diverse and highly talented team. This leadership role includes managing projects, resources, and budget. The director is expected to mentor both experienced and novice instructional designers, creating an atmosphere of collaboration, scholarship, service, and innovative design.
The director will:
- Manage the instructional designers and support staff on the instructional design team
- Mentor senior instructional designers, instructional designers, instructional design associates, and developers
- Set goals and provide regular feedback about performance to individuals on the team.
- Work with the leaders of other CEOEL business units (e.g. Media, IT, Programs) to ensure smooth process and adequate resources.
- Manage the operational budget for the team.
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with constituents. Make routine trips to campuses to develop and solidify faculty relationships.
- Maintain a commitment to practitioner scholarship by sharing new knowledge inside and outside the organization.
- Perform other duties as requested.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in instructional or education design/technology or related field with 5 or more years related instructional design experience or relevant terminal degree with three years related instructional design experience.
- 3 or more years of formal people management (5 or more individuals direct reporting) experience in an instructional design, e-learning, or related setting.
- Demonstrated skills and experience providing excellent service to internal and external clients/customers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Knowledge of learning theories, instructional design theories, instruction systems. Understanding and demonstrated application of sound pedagogy and andragogy instructional design practices.
- Demonstrated leadership in working within teams to analyze and improve instructional design.
- Willingness and ability to travel to UW System campuses to meet with faculty (statewide travel).
Highly qualified candidates will also possess several of these skills, knowledge, and abilities
- Ph.D. in Instructional Design, Educational Technology or related field.
- 5 or more years of progressive leadership in higher education.
- Supervisory responsibility for 10 or more individuals, including managers.
- Record of publications and presentations related to instructional design, education, learning technology or other related fields.
- Knowledge of trends in higher education, particularly those related to online education that may have an impact on course development. Some examples include: 508 ADA compliance, technology innovations, and policy issues.
