POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Major Gifts is a member of the development team under the External Affairs Department at Arizona Science Center and is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive major gifts fundraising program including the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual, as well as foundation and corporate, major gift prospects and donors.  S/he will also assist with creating and implementing development department goals and strategies, donor recognition programs, prospect and donor events, and communications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

·      The Director of Major Gifts will develop and manage the execution of strategic and annual fundraising plans including the establishment of fundraising priorities, goals, calendars, and budgets as they relate to major gift fundraising and the development department overall.

·      The Director of Major Gifts will establish and/or strengthen relationships with new and existing funding sources, including providing oversight to major gift prospect identification, research, qualification, engagement, solicitation, and stewardship.

·       He/she will maintain his/her own extensive and active portfolio of major gift prospects and donors.

·       The Director will provide active support to other staff and volunteer leadership in their major gift fundraising activity.  S/he will work with the President/CEO, Vice President of External Affairs, senior staff, trustees and development staff to identify, develop appropriate relationships with, and solicit major gift donors on behalf of the Center.

·       He/she will lead major gift project support, planning, and budget tracking;

·      The Director of Major Gifts will manage prospect identification by reviewing preliminary prospect research, engaging in new business development opportunities, data mining within the Science Center’s development and marketing database, and developing strategies for pursuing highly rated prospects. 

·      The Director will also assist the Science Center in establishing and growing an individual planned giving program.

·      The Director of Major Gifts will collaborate with other departments to determine funding needs and priorities and to develop substance for cases of support and proposals to major gift prospects.

·      The Director of Major Gifts will write and update descriptions of Center programs for fundraising and publicity purposes.  He/she will author and manage the process for annual donor reports in the impact of their philanthropic investments.

·       S/he will be knowledgeable about Arizona Science Center Style Guide and will assist with proofreading fundraising and departmental communications as needed.  S/he will maintain familiarity with the Center, its staff and various programs in order to communicate knowledgeably and effectively.

·      The Director of Major Gifts will assist the Vice President of External Affairs in creating department goals, strategies and measurement mechanisms.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·       Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university and a minimum of three to five years related fundraising experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and related advancement, marketing or community-relations experience preferred. Will consider candidates with equivalent experience.

·       Proven track record in major gift fundraising and portfolio management and in helping to manage comprehensive fundraising operations.  Experience in cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gift donors of $100,000 or more and in managing complex, multi-year pledges.

·       Experience in cultivating planned gifts.

·       A proven self-starter.  An experienced field-oriented development officer eager to actively engage face-to-face with current and prospective donors, volunteer leaders, and key community influencers.

·       Strategic and tactical in approach with a true commitment to the mission of the organization.

·       Solid, flexible, resourceful individual; proficient with both external relations and internal management.

·      Ability and desire to reach/exceed an annual revenue goal.

·      Experienced, entrepreneurial, results-oriented.

·      Able to be both an effective team leader and work independently.

·      Superior interpersonal skills including exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

·      Ability to effectively interface and build relationships with organization’s prospects, donors, board members.

·      Ability to build, track and communicate financial and trend results.

·      Ability to work frequent extended and flexible hours. Occasional travel a possibility.
