The Tasmanian Government is seeking to appoint a Director of Prisons for the Tasmania Prison Service, following the recent retirement of the incumbent Director. The Tasmania Prison Service contributes to a safer Tasmania by ensuring the safe, secure containment of inmates and the provision of opportunities for rehabilitation, personal development and community engagement. The Director of Prisons will be responsible for the management of the Tasmania Prison Service in accordance with agreed strategic directions and Government policy. The Director will also be a member of the senior management of the Department of Justice.
The appointee will be responsible for the general management of prison services including overall responsibility for the management of financial, physical and human resources, including the formulation, development and directing of strategies to achieve agreed organisational goals.
The Director of Prisons will progress the Corrections Reform Agenda within the framework of the Breaking the Cycle Strategic Plan for Tasmanian Corrections 2011-2020. The Director will also work closely over the next two years with the soon to be appointed Change Manager to lead significant cultural and organisational change, including implementing
the recommendations of the Palmer Inquiry into the Risdon Prison Complex. The person appointed will promote modern and effective contemporary management practices throughout the Tasmania Prison Service, ensuring a strong commitment to workplace safety, human rights, and the principles of workplace diversity. The appointee will report to the Director of Corrective Services.
The role requires proven leadership and management skills, high level strategic focus, and extensive senior experience in a corrections environment.
High quality candidates will have an established track record of leadership in a corrections environment, and considerable strategic, conceptual, analytical and creative skills. High-level interpersonal skills, including infuencing, negotiation and conflict resolution skills, and astute judgement are also key requirements.
