Director of Software Development - Elastic Compute Cloud
Cloud computing is seeing rapid adoption from companies of all sizes. These companies are looking to move their diverse applications and workloads into the cloud to realize the cost savings and the functionality benefits provided by these services. While much of the early adoption of Cloud Computing was in the Linux space, Amazon EC2 has seen significant recent adoption from Windows customers as well, both from startups as well as from large enterprises and the Federal Government. There is now considerable attention from customers and industry leaders on moving Windows-based applications to the cloud.
We are looking for a broad leader who will be responsible for setting a vision for our Windows offering and executing on that vision. This leader's responsibilities will include all aspects of our Windows business including product management and marketing, building the software and services necessary to drive Windows adoption, managing the operation and performance of those Windows oriented services and generally driving a fantastic customer experience for customers looking to run Windows applications in the cloud.
Key Strategic Objectives:
Develop and execute on a vision for delivering the best Cloud Computing solution for Windows customers
The right leader will aggressively define and execute on a roadmap to programmatically expand the addressable Windows market, including delivery of new features, new license models, additional software offerings and expanded partner ecosystem efforts.
Grow and lead the organization through change, evolution, and sustained growth
This individual will need to exhibit excellent judgment on how to prioritize between operational excellence, feature development and demand-generating activities.
Focus on driving broad adoption and providing unparalleled customer
experience
Develop a strategic and tactical plan that drives additional awareness, trial, adoption, and repeat usage of Amazon EC2 from Windows customers. Among the mechanisms this leader should evaluate and be comfortable with include feature development, pricing changes, various marketing channels (i.e. Public Relations, Search Engine Marketing, Developer Evangelism, Promotions, etc.), sample application, code samples, and technical documentation, development, etc. This leader must have extensive experience working with Windows developers to ensure products are architected and operated in such a way to earn the reputation of not only being a great value proposition, but also that they deliver the development experience Windows customers expect.
- Develop a Amazon EC2 Windows roadmap that maximizes adoption and develops compelling long-term value for customers
- Assess existing talent and design/build a high performance team capable of both innovation and operational excellence that is needed to scale with the rapidly growing business
- Define and execute against meaningful performance and operational SLAs that capture the customer experience
- Foster meaningful relationships with Microsoft, and other ISV partners
- Set and meet aggressive customer adoption goals

The successful candidate will be a broad leader - part builder, part operator and part general manager. This leader has thrived and succeeded in delivering high quality technology products/services in a very high growth (30% per month) environment where priorities shift rapidly. He or she is a strong leader who can prioritize well, communicate clearly and compellingly and who understands how to drive a high level of focus and excellence with a strong, talented, opinionated team. This leader should have a proven ability to design, deliver, and operate a technical service that is robust in the face of failure around it. It is important that this leader have an operational component to his/her leadership skill set.
Basic Qualifications:
- Possesses a strong understanding of the Windows Server market
- Has experience building or supporting Windows based workloads and applications
- Is technically deep enough to engage with customers and participate in roadmap prioritization
- Has experience with large scale distributed systems and enterprise software development
In addition to the qualifications listed above, we are also looking for someone who:
- Has lead teams of at least 50 people and scaled teams 25%-30% per year
- Has managed a PL of $500MM or more and lead multiple line and staff functions both on the revenue generating and cost sides
- Has led both product management and software engineering teams in delivering a commercially successful technology product
- Has a BS in Computer Science or an engineering field, MBA a plus.
