DIRECTOR OF VOLUNTEER SERVICES Job in Silver Spring 20910, Maryland Us

Director of Volunteer Services

Hostelling International USA (HI-USA) is a large, national nonprofit organization headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland whose mission is to promote intercultural understanding and exchange through experiential travel.  Founded in 1934, HI-USA delivers its mission through a network of 60 hostels, educational programs, and engagement with local community members and travelers.

This is a very exciting time for HI-USA as we begin a major restructuring that will unify 26 local councils and the national office into a single organization.  Going forward, volunteer engagement staff will be placed in five regional field offices to support a more robust volunteer program across the country.  The Director of Volunteer Services will have responsibility for developing and supporting that nationwide program and assuring the success of volunteers who want to promote hostelling and deliver the HI-USA program.  Both traditional volunteer organizing approaches (friends groups and advisory boards) and virtual volunteer participation (“free agents”) will be hallmarks of our organizational success.

Overall Responsibility

The Director of Volunteer Services is responsible for developing a culture of volunteerism throughout the HI-USA network that reflects and furthers its mission.  He or she will implement and maintain a flexible infrastructure and provide guidance, support and resources for the development of a robust volunteer engagement program across the country.
