Position Summary

Under general direction of the Managing Director – Managed Services, manages the daily departmental operations and clinical services, interprets physicians’ prescriptions and compounds and dispenses medications within regulatory guidelines. Consults with physicians and other professional staff regarding use of medications and potential drug interactions; counsels patients as requested and required on safe use of prescribed medications.

This position is categorized as compliance critical and, as such, requires and is assigned specific responsibility for ensuring continual and proper compliance with all division, corporate and regulatory requirements.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Responsible for the procurement and dispensing of medications; verifies prescribed medications according to professional standards, policies and procedures, and state and federal legal requirements.
    2. Ensures all licenses, registrations and permits are current.
    3. Maintains and manages any required virtual or separate inventories in accordance with all regulations and guidelines.
    4. Maintains the Pharmacy Quality Improvement Program.
    5. Maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory standards.
    6. Maintains all Pharmacy Operational Clinical Policies and Procedures.
    7. Consults with patients regarding medications or supplies prescribed, including dosage, frequency, specialized requirements and possible drug interactions.
    8. Ensures all AR and payment variances are reconciled and recovered.
    9. Reviews and evaluates patient's plan of care for obvious conflicts.
    10. Manages all associate relations functions for the staff pharmacist(s) and pharmacy technicians such as hiring, terminating and performance management.
    11. Monitors the overall performance of staff members to ensure compliance with policies, practices and approved pharmaceutical dispensing processes.
    12. Maintains established procedures concerning quality assurance, security of controlled substances, and record keeping.
    13. Receives input from staff and clients and makes appropriate changes to operating procedures in an effort to facilitate smooth customer service operations.
    14. Performs prescription and order entry verification, providing technical guidance to staff pharmacist(s) and pharmacy technicians.
    15. Responds to customer inquiries, requests and issues when situations get escalated to a higher level of authority other than a customer service associate.
    16. Ensures integrity of all billing, cost data and reports.
    17. Reviews daily reporting and scheduling of hours worked for the staff pharmacist(s) and pharmacy technicians to include sick time, vacation time, personal and holiday time.
    18. Supervises activities relative to customer files and contacts, ensuring that they are updated as needed to comply with current licensing.
    19. Leads department meetings and related in-service training for staff pharmacist(s), pharmacy technicians, nursing and ancillary clinical staff.
    20. Performs related duties as assigned.
Experience and Education Requirements

Requires broad training or related experience in fields such as business administration, accountancy, sales, marketing, computer sciences or similar vocations. Normally requires two (2) to four (4) years directly related and progressively responsible experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory/management role; a Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy/RPh License required. Advanced degree, Master's or Pharm.D. and successful completion of an ASHP accredited Residency is strongly preferred.
