ED, Lead Technical Architect, Tier One Global Bank, Multi-Year Greenfield Program recruitment
Join one of 2011’s strongest performing tier one investment banks, in a brand new team, leading a greenfield multi-year, cross-functional flagship program, described as “transformational for the entire bank” by those sponsoring it.
The firm are just embarking on a multi-year project to build an entirely new subledger platform. This will support processing in excess of 200M events / day, covering all asset classes and trading desks in the firm. The project has literally just started – with no serious design work started yet, just some functional analysis. They need a senior, hands-on technical architect to lead, oversee and guide this critical program.
Operating on the scale they need will require extraordinary capabilities in terms of size, scalability, resiliency, flexibility, and performance. They want to utilise state of the art technologies to overcome this, and wish to implement a next generation virtualization / cloud platform. Knowledge in this area is of high interest to them, as with expertise in distributed grid computing/caching platforms, and functional programming (Scala is widely used across the firm). This project is also being used a testing bed for new technologies across the bank as a whole – in the manager’s words they will be “deploying new technologies in new ways, and setting new technical direction for the bank as a whole”. This is a high profile project being watched closely by senior managers across the firm.
They need a heavyweight technical leader with experience of architecting large systems. Experience will need to broadly cover (not exhaustive, and not every point essential):
- Experience as a lead architect on new, large-scale platforms
- Experience of rolling these out incrementally (they will be doing it asset class by asset class)
- Well versed with languages and databases, and their use in enterprise systems – realistically strong Java experience (or at least the VM) will likely be required
- Interested in people with knowledge of how to utilise virtualization, grid techniques, cloud computing
- Non-finance is fine – but obviously beneficial – the bigger requirement is the level of technical depth to build a system of this size and scale
- Real-time event driven systems
- SOA systems
- Large OLTP or transaction reporting databases
- Messaging technologies
- Agile (or at least agile-esque) experience – iterative, incremental roll-out
- There is likely to be multiple headcount due to the sheer scale of the project, so there is some flexibility
This is a rare opportunity to join a multi-year project in a leadership position before any design has even begun – particularly one with as much technical freedom and opportunity to utilise cutting edge technologies. Anyone with a strong technology passion and interest in designing and building enterprise systems should be very interested by this position.
