Editorial Director - CNN Sports

Qualifications: Must have global sports expertise, 5 years Management/leadership experience in a multimedia environment and significant body of work related to sports journalism. Desired experience: Network news (beyond sports coverage), live show production, feature show production, documentary, field production/reporting and/or multi-platform content. Duties: The CNN News Group is in need of an accomplished editorial leader for sports coverage across all platforms. This includes renewed interest from CNN, ongoing expectations from CNNI, HLN Newsource, and growing opportunities with CNN Digital. This position will ensure that sports coverage efforts are integrated into the fabric of the CNN News Group's editorial planning process, and are aligned with the programming needs of individual platforms across the company. Additionally this position will be integral in growing partnerships internally and externally, in an effort to strategically provide quality content in a cost-efficient manner, while growing the number and scope of revenue-generating sponsorship offerings tied to sports coverage. Responsibilities include: Lead CNN News Group position for all sports-related coverage and story treatment. Global scope ranges from domestic (NFL, MLB, NCAA) to international (soccer, rugby, cricket) to event (Olympics) to niche and emerging sports. Oversight includes: Leading breaking news coverage: identifying topical stories, trends, issues, investigations; efforting character profiles and story connections with regard to business, health, pop culture, etc. Recognizing and overseeing sports connections with regard to business, health, pop culture, etc.; contributing to and/or leading event coverage, specials, documentaries, show development, etc.; final approval responsibility, including coordination with legal, SP and executive team on all sensitive matters. Primary sports liaison for all clients and partners across the CNN News Group, and critical contributor/leader in partnerships with other sports-related operations across Time Warner such as Turner Sports and Sports Illustrated. Includes: Establishing strong relationships and committing to regular communication with editorial leaders and programmers across the CNN News Group. Must possess a full understanding of the editorial processes and goals for the individual platforms. Must be fully integrated in to the editorial planning process for each, attending all daily editorial meetings. Maintaining strong ties to Newsgathering efforts, resources and opportunities to ensure execution on editorial expectations. Identifying and overseeing content-sharing opportunities between CNN platforms and Turner Sports, Sports Illustrated and others. Will also be responsible for creating a structured process for editorial planning, approval and execution. This includes: daily coverage/editorial communications, futures planning process, information-sharing process across all internal platforms and external partners, process for coordination with PR, Promotions, Digital, Sales, etc., defined roles and responsibilities for all staff supporting the editorial process. Staff management responsibilities may include: Direct reports (supervisor level), dotted-line reports may include talent, producers and assignment editors. Will have responsibility for all significant editorial assignments. Expected to lead and support company goals and initiatives as a member of the leadership team.
