Effectiveness is a capability group, encompassing IT Sourcing and IT Effectiveness activities, within Technology focused on advising clients on delivering efficient and effective IT functions by improving the way various aspects of IT organisations are run - we passionately believe in "Simply Better IT". There is a focus on maximising the value created across all areas of IT, driving IT effectiveness through a structured yet flexible process of IT sourcing. The group plays a key advisory, support and transformation role in the CIO agenda through the lenses of people, process and controls/governance. Our aim is to help clients get more value from the way their IT is run, working at both the strategic and detailed level depending on the particular assignment. We work across the IT function, including those parts of the organisation focused on Strategy, Development, and Operations (including Vendor Management). Typical drivers for our work include a change in IT leadership, cost reduction, market competitiveness, or a lack of trust and confidence in the IT function. Primary focus of the role will be working on client projects to perform the following engagement activities:
- IT Operating Models: Supporting a senior IT leadership team or business sponsor to develop an IT Operating Model, outlining the strategic aims of the organisation, and then defining the various components of the IT function, including roles, processes, governance controls, interfaces with the business and potentially tools. Candidates should be expected to demonstrate that they have experience of working with senior IT executives and helping to challenge, influence and support them in agreeing a common way forward
- IT Assessments: Undertaking an IT maturity assessment, potentially across all elements of the IT function. Such an assignment would examine how business alignment, strategy, architecture, development and operations are currently being run, and seek to understand issues with capability, process and governance. The assignment would conclude with a set of recommendations and next steps.
- IT Process design work, typically within the area of Service Management/ITIL. In such assignments we would support a client in assessing detailed aspects of IT processes, and help in the detailed design of new processes. Such a role would require strong expertise in Service Management, potentially gained from a Service Management delivery background.
- IT Transformation: Many of our initial assessments evolve into longer term IT transformation projects and these assignments would consist of the detailed planning and execution of IT organisation or operating model designs, including IT Shared services. Typically a number of capability releases would be made consisting of new ways of working, processes and services.
- IT Sourcing: Focus around advising large organisations on how to source, re-procure, transform and optimise their IT and associated services. Designing and implementing retained IT organisations, aligned with the IT Operating Model to manage IT outsource providers. Candidates should be expected to demonstrate that they have a mix of commercial, technical and programme delivery expertise as well as an extensive understanding of current market offerings, future services and technological trends.
Specific responsibilities require a combination of management, consultancy and analytical skills to:
- Perform and support activities within the engagement types defined above
- Work within teams of my client and personnel to achieve engagement outcomes, working closely with client stakeholders, e.g. through client interviews or workshop facilitation,
- Produce and present reports, business cases and other client deliverables
You will also support the continued growth of Effectiveness through involvement in internal capability development and sales activity such as:
- Development of propositions to promote sales to new and existing clients
- Development of client proposals
- Development of our capabilities, methods and training
Candidates should be able to demonstrate expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Ability to design IT organisations and operating models (including their components):
- IT Operating model and organisation design, including designing and implementing retained Shared Services organisation
- Governance processes
- Operational processes
- Service Management/Governance tooling
- Have hands on experience, or be familiar with the various components of an IT organisation:
- Strategy
- Architecture
- Development
- Operations/Run
- Vendor Management
- Have detailed experience of designing and transforming IT processes, in the areas of:
- Service Management/ITIL
- Software Delivery
- Vendor Management
- Governance/CobiT
- Be able to undertake various stages of IT effectiveness work:
- Assessment
- Design
- Implementation/Transformation
- Be able to undertake various stages of IT Sourcing work:
- Assessment
- Design
- Evaluate
- Implementation/Transformation/Transition
- Optimise
More senior grades will also be expected to demonstrate a proven capability in some of the following areas:
- IT Transformation
- Senior IT leadership engagement
- Project management using industry standard methods (PRINCE2, PMP, MSP)
- Lean Six Sigma and CMMI
- Programme Management Office leadership
- Quality assurance review
- IT contract negotiation/development

This means having the capability to understand business objectives / context and translate these into the delivery of technical solutions in a variety of environments.
