Electrical Engineer – Power Electronics Job in Longmont 80501, Colorado Us

Stored Energy Systems (SENS) is an award-winning manufacturer of quality power conversion products located in Longmont, CO.  In business for over 40 years, SENS has a proven track record of providing highly reliable battery chargers, DC power supplies and related products to industrial and commercial markets.

This position requires both focused expertise in switch-mode power design and broad electrical engineering skills.

·         The Engineer will have primary responsibility for detailed design of new switch-mode battery chargers for industrial applications such as generator set engine starting.  The Engineer will be a key participant in defining a switch-mode architecture for on-going development of a family of switch-mode products.

·         The Engineer will apply a broad set of skills to sustaining engineering tasks on existing products.

·         Applies design for testability and manufacturability (DFX) principles to new designs.

·         Creates and maintains a variety of technical documentation such as product specifications, white paper analyses, new product proposals, and test reports, etc.

·         Uses EE CAD tools for schematic capture and printed circuit layout.  Creates and maintains component libraries.  Uses EE CAD tools to create wiring/interconnect diagrams.  Uses revision control software as required. Performs all CAD work in accordance with company standards.

·         Creates and maintains component data sheets for approved suppliers and assembly bills of material (BOMs).

·         Qualifies new/alternate suppliers and performs first article inspections.

·         Specifies (and sometimes executes) a variety of testing requirements for design verification, stress testing, regulatory testing, system-level regression testing, and production functional testing.  Designs custom hardware, fixtures, etc. as required to support these tests. 

·         Builds breadboard and prototype circuits as required.

·         Uses oscilloscopes, voltmeters, spectrum analyzers, data acquisition systems, load banks and similar instruments to perform tests and measurements.

·         Analyzes product failures to identify root cause and specifies corrective action.

·         Performs technical research on a broad range of topics and gives reliable advice on difficult engineering problems.

Required Skills

·         Performs in-depth analyses and modeling of analog power circuits and high-frequency magnetics including worst-case analysis, stress analysis, and derating to achieve performance and reliability.  Validates models with appropriate empirical data. Experience in using computer analysis and simulation tools such as Spice, MatLab, etc.

·         Performs thermal analysis and modeling of critical components and validates models with appropriate empirical data.

·         Balances requirements for performance and reliability goals with cost constraints.

·         Designs power systems with embedded microcontrollers.

 

Additional Desired Skills

·         Firmware development for microcontrollers using C-language and/or assembly language.

·         Prior experience with application software development for engineering and production tests.

·         Prior experience with non-switch-mode power technologies, such as thyristor controlled converters.

·         Prior experience with large batteries and battery charging.

·         Prior experience with design of single-phase and 3-phase line frequency 50/60Hz transformers.

·         Prior experience with design for UL, CSA, CE, FCC, NEC compliance and similar regulatory requirements.

 

Education/Experience

·         B.S. in Electrical Engineering with 8-10+ years of applicable experience, M.S. in Electrical Engineering with 5+ years of applicable experience.  Strong power electronics design skills applicable to switch-mode power.

·         Demonstrated ability to bring a switch-mode power supply design through a complete development cycle from concept to production.

·         Demonstrated ability in analysis of power electronics.

·         Demonstrated ability with all phases of printed circuit assembly (PCA) design and development.

·         Work is performed in office, engineering lab, and manufacturing environments that may be noisy and fast-paced.  Tasks include the use of office equipment (phone, fax, computer, etc.) and electrical lab/test equipment.

·         Speaking and hearing are required to communicate by telephone.  Vision and depth perception are required to perform essential duties.  Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs is required.
