Summary
This position attends patients being transported to and from the institution by ambulance on emergency and non-emergency situations. Also is responsible for the patients' safety en route. Incumbents determine when a patient's condition requires emergency patient care such as administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen, and resuscitation. This position provides emergency technical care at the scene of an accident or other emergency.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides for the comfort and safety of acute and non-ambulatory stretcher patients during ambulance trips by performing patient care functions such as positioning, suctioning, and checking pulse, respiration, and color.
- Lifts and transfers patients between beds and stretchers or height adjustable ambulance cots equipped with wheels and carries patients on stretchers or wheels them on ambulance cots assisted by the Ambulance Driver. Lifts patients into and out of an ambulance and positions them securely in the ambulance with the assistance of the Ambulance Driver.
- Decides whether or not to interrupt an assigned trip and transport a patient who requires emergency treatment to the nearest emergency hospital.
- Determines when the condition of a patient requires emergency patient care such as administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, oxygen, or resuscitation with an ambu bag. Administers emergency technical care at the scene of an accident or other emergency, if necessary.
- Quiets and applies restraints to patients who become irrational or violent with assistance from the Ambulance Driver, if necessary.
- Checks and replenishes first aid kit, emergency patient care equipment, and linen supplies in the ambulance.
- May perform the duties of Ambulance Dispatcher or Ambulance Driver on an emergency relief basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Successful completion of Emergency Medical Technician I training.
- Six (6) months of experience at the level of Ambulance Driver or Clinic Driver.
- State Class “3" Driver’s License and a State Ambulance Driver’s Certificate.
- A State class “2" driver’s license may be required.
