Energy Analyst – Mining & Metals Research recruitment

Role Purpose
The Analyst role forms part of Wood Mackenzie’s Coal Research team, and will be responsible for data collection and organization and the delivery of analysis and insight for inclusion within the Americas Coal Supply Services as well as other bulk services as needed. The role also offers the ability for an individual to build and broaden their existing metals and mining knowledge as part of the wider Wood Mackenzie team.  This is the ideal career move for individuals with relevant industry knowledge who want to make the most of their talent and take it to new heights. Working as part of a regional team you'll be responsible for the production and development of quality research and analysis.

Main Responsibilities

• Apply knowledge of the mining industry to specific research products and assignments and be able to produce quantitative and qualitative analysis for the Americas Coal Supply Services 
• Conduct bottom-up analysis of the cost structure of individual mine assets including operational benchmarking, as well as top-down reconciliation of corporate financial accounts to individual assets
• Liaise with the other research specialists to ensure an integrated approach is taken to coal supply modelling.
• Establish and maintain contact with producers/ stakeholders to secure proprietary data and visit assets in assigned regions to acquire data and knowledge.
• Participate in relevant industry events to network, obtain market intelligence and promote research products.
• Identify, obtain, sort and organise sources of information relevant to the coal supply sector. Take ownership of and responsibility for analysis undertaken and carry out regular product updates.
• Contribute new ideas, enthusiasm and desire for excellence to the work of the team and participate in the enhancement of existing research and the development of new services in the coal and bulks arena
• Effectively communicate analysis findings to clients through written deliverables (including webcalls, podcasts, PowerPoint TM presentations) and face-to-face presentations
• Participate in supporting sales and marketing efforts and assist in retention of existing clients
Co-operate and communicate fully with Consulting, Sales and Marketing teams in the Business Development process
 

Knowledge and Experience
This role requires the ability to critically assess new sources of information within a complex analytical framework in an appropriate timeframe. The analyst will be keen to draw together the many divergent threads of the supply side of the industry and to communicate his/ her understanding to the client base.
Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (e.g. Mining Engineering/ Geology or Economics/ Business etc.), the role holder will have knowledge of the coal industry gained from 2 - 5 years of experience in an operational environment.  Alternatively, previous employment in a resource company in a non operational role, or a banking background would be considered.
The successful candidate must demonstrate strong interest in the coal and metals and mining industries; and some experience of aspects of the coal value chain and the desire to grow into a recognised analytical expert. He/She should possess strong quantitative skills, preferably with some experience of asset valuations and/ or economic modelling, as well as an excellent writing style. Excellent communication and collaborative skills is essential to work as part of fully functioning team across multiple locations and also to relate to coal experts internally and in client organisations.
