Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve consist of six physically separate sites and a park headquarters located in southeastern Louisiana and spread out over an area of 200 miles. The sites in Lafayette, Thibodaux and Eunice interpret the Acadian culture of the area. The Barataria Preserve in Marrero, Louisiana interprets the natural and cultural history of the uplands, swamps, and marshlands of the region. Six miles southeast of New Orleans is the Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetery, site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans and the final resting place for soldiers from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I and II and Vietnam. Park headquarters and the French Quarter visitor center are located in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. This position is located within the Barataria Preserve Unit of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve in the Maintenance Division, Marrero, Louisiana. Its primary purpose is to perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on small engine equipment and also perform minor routine maintenance and repairs for buildings, utilities, equipment, and other facilities as needed in the park. DUTIES: Back to top Perform maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on small engine equipment, tractors, and other vehicles with similar characteristics including gasoline and diesel engines and other mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, computer-assisted and electronically controlled systems. Perform boat, vehicle and equipment operation checks in order to determine safety deficiencies or service requirements of all park vehicles and equipment. Perform preventive maintenance, tune-ups, inspect, repair and overhaul small engines and other components on equipment such as lawn mowers, weed eaters, pumps, cement mixers, motorcycles, ATV's and other related park equipment. Assist in maintenance of self-contained aeration treatment water and waste water treatment units. Operate vehicles including cars, trucks, small dump trucks, riding mowers, small tractors, and other equipment such as back hoes and operation of small outboard motor boats. Perform minor routine maintenance and repair work to buildings and utilities work associated with carpentry, painting, electrical and welding. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid driver's license is required. Prior to your first motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter, (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation and again every year or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities) at your own expense, all certified driving records from all states that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past possessed by you. Selection for this position is subject to a favorable background investigation to determine suitability for Federal Service. This is a drug testing designated position. Selectee must submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result before appointment to this position. Position is also subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Position is subject to weekend and holiday work. You will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year, if applicable. This position is required to complete an Employment and Financial Interest form (OFE-450), based upon the potential responsibility for serving as a COTR. Incumbent of this position will be required to wear a National Park Service (NPS) uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. You must meet time-in-grade restrictions and qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Work is both in side and outside; inside work is performed in crowded conditions. When working outside, incumbent is exposed to bad weather and biting insects. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will be paid for current career/career-conditional Federal employees if the person selected for the position is from outside the local commuting area and is otherwise eligible for reimbursement of relocation expenses under the Federal Travel Regulations.
