Major industry trends such as data center convergence, virtualization and cloud services have created significant disruption to the networking industry. The traditional network architecture and business model are under attack. Rapid adoption of virtualization capabilities in both servers and storage, where Dell is already an industry-leader, is pushing the limits of hierarchical, multi-tiered, traditional network architectures. These architectures must change to meet the new demands of users who demand data center services anytime, anywhere. As a systems solution company, Dell is well positioned to take advantage of this disruption and redefine the networking architecture. As such, Dell is strategically investing in the networking business group.
The Networking CTO team is at the center of this business initiative. The CTO team is responsible for the technology strategy, system architecture, technology innovation, and partnership and acquisition of key technologies, for Dell's networking business. The CTO team will define and drive Dell’s networking strategy by developing a 2-3 year vision and technology roadmap which ultimately delivers products that meet our customers’ true needs. Playing an integral role in the company’s strategic direction, product planning and development for networking and related systems management capabilities, the CTO team will lead visionary aspects of the company’s technology planning for networking and will lead industry standard initiatives and develop networking architectures that support corporate technological and business initiatives.
The Dell Networking CTO team is looking for four (4) architecture leaders at Principal Engineer or Distinguished Engineer level in the following areas:
- Network Operating System (NOS)/Protocol and Software Architecture
- ASIC/Silicon and Hardware Architecture
- Application Delivery Architecture
- Network and Application Security Architecture

Primary Location: Silicon Valley, CA
Secondary Location: Round Rock, TX
Major Responsibilities
- Define multi-year networking architecture strategy in perspective areas and work with product management and engineering teams to lead the strategy execution and product roadmap
- Serve as the “technical nucleus” to the Networking BU; mentor and develop technical depth; build and maintain consistent architecture (NOS/HW/Network Services/Management)
- Collaboration with Dell CTO community to drive “better together” architecture/solutions
- Collaborate with Sales Engineering teams to win customer mindshare
- Influence industry standards, open source partner communities to drive architecture alignment
- Incubate technology projects and collaborate with research community to drive Dell innovation and product differentiation
Qualifications
15+ years of experience and progressive responsibility in data networking (switching and/or routing), storage area networking, L4-L7 networking services, Internet application, or virtualization space. Strong technology and architecture leadership and demonstrated results in one or more of the following areas are needed:
• Data center networking: FCoE; DCB; TRILL; server access; server virtual switching; IO virtualization; SR-IOV; VEPA; server interconnect
• Data center interconnect: L2 extension; dynamic service overlay over WAN core (OTV/LISP)
• L4-L7 network services: Firewall/IPS/unified threat management; WAN optimization; load balancing; virtualized network services
• Cloud solutions: multi-tenant hosting; virtual desktop; data intensive computing; Hadoop
• Key standards areas: IEEE 802.3; IEEE 802.1; SNIA; IETF; DMTF
• Ability and demonstrated success in building working relationship with key partners and influencing and driving architecture alignment of partner solutions
• Ability and demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams to drive architecture solutions and influencing product development decisions
• Ability and experience in leading or participating in industry standards activities; demonstrated success in technical contributions or external publications a plus
• Ability and experience in working with sales engineers and customers architecture leads to discuss architecture solutions to support sales engagement
Education
Bachelor’s degree in CS or EE is a minimum; advanced degree (Master or Ph.D.) a plus
