Position Summary:
Under general direction, the EHS Manager develops, implements, and manages the POM Wonderful environmental health and safety program; conducts safety inspections and training; serves as consultant to departments on safety and environmental issues;; and performs related duties as required.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Responsible for providing leadership for the implementation, enforcement and continuous improvement of POM Wonderful environmental health and safety policies and processes.
- Provide vision, leadership, and technical expertise in safety and loss prevention; advise management on loss control and risk reduction strategies; provide consultation and technical assistance to all departments.
- Manage reporting and permitting processes for company operations using appropriate in-house and contract resources to ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
- Enforce safe practices daily with a visible presence in the manufacturing and office areas. Lead incident investigations wherever needed; assure that fire control and other safety equipment is properly tested, inspected, posted and marked; assure that hazardous materials are handled, stored and disposed of appropriately.
- Coordinate the response to all federal and/or state regulatory agency inquiries or inspections (including CAL-OSHA, CAL-EPA); represent the organization in the community and in industry safety groups and programs.
- Track and provide insight into common issues, trends, problems, and opportunities to reduce losses and accident costs; maintain information and performance measurement systems to ensure that loss information is tracked and effectively communicated.
- Provide synergy and an integrated effort for the implementation of an on-going safety improvement process that includes pre-injury loss prevention strategies; provide facility emergency response services as part of emergency coordinator team; lead the Safety Committee and monitor facility committees.
- Develop and provide on-site classroom training and individual counseling on safety topics such as hazard communication, ergonomics, waste management, personal protective equipment, process safety management, lifting/back safety, bonding grounding, LOTO/Confined Space Entry/Hot Work/Safe Work permitting, hazard identification, accident prevention techniques, and accident reporting; coordinate training records; monitor/audit compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
- Provide guidance and direction to ensure the professional development of internal resources; manage external safety and property loss control resources to ensure that they provide a value-added change or enhancement to existing activities.
- Manage existing safety and loss control budgets and provide input to assure that funds are available and effectively utilized for loss prevention activities.
Requirements and Minimum Education Level:
- Requires a minimum of 5-10 years experience in safety management, property protection, and loss control at a management level.
- Requires extensive knowledge of the development, implementation, and monitoring of safety and loss control programs. Experience within an industrial manufacturing environment is essential, preferably in fine chemical production or related industries.
- Ability to understand and interpret written material, including technical information, rules, regulations, agency rules, executive orders and laws; conduct tests and inspect working areas, machinery, equipment and working conditions for compliance with occupational safety and health regulations.
- Requires the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as respirator; meet physical demands of position such as walking, standing, lifting up to 40 pounds, climbing ladders and stairs, bending, squatting, and crawling in tight spaces to safely access work sites.
- Requires a sound knowledge of relevant federal regulations for a production facility: OSHA, EPA, NFPA, et al. Familiarity with state of California OSHA EPA would be preferred.
- Requires a Bachelor’s Degree (B.S.) in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or equivalent and valid driver’s license.
Desirable Qualifications Experience:
- Designation as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the American Board of Certified Safety Professionals or possession of other applicable certification (i.e. designation as an Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Safety Helath Manager (CHSM), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or possession of the National Safety Council’s Advanced Safety Certificate (ASC)).
- Experience in evaluating and implementing a comprehensive environemental health safety program; training techniques; basic principles of risk management; techniques of accident prevention; laws and regulations applicable to employee safety and occupational health (i.e. CAL-OSHA); principles, practices, and methods of safety, occupational health, and loss prevention programs; industrial safety practices; methods of assessing safety hazards and controls; techniques for conducting accident investigations and safety inspections.
