Environmental Health Specialist III
$31.35-$38.12/hour
This recruitment is being conducted to fill one Full-Time vacancy for an Evironmental Health Specialist III (CST: EHS III) in the Well Septic Section of the Permit Resource Management Department (PRMD). The employment list established from this recruitment may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help vacancies as they occur during the active status of the list. County employees who wish to be considered for future vacancies should consider applying to this recruitment.
PRMD's Well Septic Section is divided into three program areas; the Water Wells Program (i.e., groundwater protection), the Operational Permits Program (Non-Standard Sewage Disposal Systems), and the Liquid Waste Program. Sonoma County is at the forefront of innovative/experimental septic systems, with 2,200 permitted non-standard systems of over 13 varied types currently in the monitoring program. Therefore PRMD's Well and Septic Section staff has developed a unique level of expertise in evaluating these systems.
An EHS III works with the public to provide information, consultation, and educational services designed to encourage sound sanitary practices. This incumbent will work closely with the well industry and be assigned to oversee the Well Program to permit and inspect water wells in the county as well as permit and inspect well-destructs, evaluate water yield tests, and facilitate groundwater protection including program development (i.e., forms, handouts, and ordinance development and implementation). Additional duties will include learning about septic program procedures as mentioned above and performing application in-take with heavy customer service contact.
The EHS III works under general supervision to serve as a subject matter resource in a specific program area and as such; develops and implements procedures and policies relative to environmental health programs; conducts investigations, inspections, surveys and makes recommendations to enforce state and local laws pertaining to environmental health; advises the District Environmental Health Specialists on problem areas related to program operation; and assists in training and supervising subordinate personnel.
