EQUIPMENT OPERATOR Job in Freeport 04032, Maine US


The Public Works Department for the Town of Freeport is seeking an Equipment Operator.

Operating under general supervision from the Public Works Superintendent, and in accordance with established policies and procedures, the incumbent is responsible for independently operating a variety of light construction and maintenance equipment to accomplish assigned tasks.

Qualified candidates MUST have experience with the operation of front-end loader, backhoe, dump trucks and related motorized equipment. Experience in snow plowing operations, and a mechanical background a plus. A Maine Driver's License CDL Class B is required; Class A preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Operates any of several pieces of light construction and maintenance equipment (including, but not limited to, street sweeper, skid steer, sidewalk tractor) to perform routine repairs, maintenance and construction activities on streets, roads, bridges, storm sewers, draining pipes, ditches, buildings and other municipal facilities.
- Acts as a mason in reconstruction of manholes and catch basin repairs.
- Operates motor truck with or without such attachments as hoists, pumps, or winches and assists in the loading and unloading material carried.
- Operates a light roller, front-end loader, backhoe, road maintainer, street sweeper, snow tractor, etc. when requested in connection with street or grounds maintenance activities.
- Loads snow and ice; plows walk, and cuts trenches for public works construction.
- Performs general maintenance and repair work on mechanical equipment and tractors.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Performs the duties of a truck driver or laborer as needed and assigned.
- Plows snow, sands roads and sidewalks, and clears parking lots in winter months as needed. - Operates other equipment as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as required.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

- A High School Diploma or equivalent with 1 to 3 years of experience in a similar environment or equivalent combination of education and experience
- A Class "B" Drivers License
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance requirements of various light construction and maintenance equipment and trucks with the ability to make minor adjustments and perform necessary basic service maintenance
- Basic knowledge of Dig Safe rules and regulations
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in truck operation
- The ability to operate light equipment, and trucks skillfully, safely and in accordance with traffic laws and regulations
- Knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety precautions of the work
- Ability to read, write legibly and follow oral instructions in English
- The proven ability to perform as a team player

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: General supervision over small work crews as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Regular physical activity required, including driving, walking, standing, stooping, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift, carry, and position objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques, up to 50 lbs above shoulders, lift and carry up to 75 lbs and push or pull 150 lbs.
- Normally outdoors in noisy and sometimes unpleasant situations with exposure to extreme elements and temperatures.
- Moderate to maximum exposure to injury or other hazard.
