UPMC Northwest, located approximately 90 miles north of Pittsburgh, is hiring a Full-Time ER Tech to help support the Emergency Department for its UPMC Northwest location. This position will be working varied shifts, mostly night. The ER Tech maintains a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, assist with transporting patients and meeting their basic needs. This position also includes Health Unit Coordinator responsibilities. The Health Unit Coordinator greets all patients, family members, visitors and staff members. Assists with all communications regarding the department, accurately updates and maintains patient flow process and coordinate patient tests and procedures. Responsibilities -Accountable and supervise those on unit. -Perform 15 to 30 minute checks on patients. -Supervision of patient off unit. -Transport/escort patients to diagnostic tests in the Medical Center at request of the charge nurse. -Transport patients to their room at the request of the charge nurse. -Report observations to the nurse in charge; talk and interact with patients; assist patients to their car. -Report abnormal vital signs, patient complaints/questions, behavior indicating distress. -Assist patients with ADL's. -Help patient in or out of bed or wheelchair. -Assist with meals, i.e. serving meal and feeding patient as indicated. -Assist with toileting as indicated. -Provide blankets, emesis basins as needed. -Perform vitals and assist with treatments. -Perform patients vital signs and help nurses with admission; report any unusual findings to the charge nurse; gown patient. -Wipe carts and place clean linens, make up carts, check rooms for cleanliness, notify charge nurse to contact Housekeeping as needed. -Place belongings in a bag if patient is to be admitted or has deceased. Label bag. -Perform EKGs as requested. -Perform catheterizations as requested. -Perform phlebotomy for diagnostic testing as requested. -Perform wound irrigation, suture set-up and sterile dressing. -Assist with splinting and crutch training. -Assist with stocking and obtaining of supplies for clinical area. -Stock bedside supplies. -Daily checks to ensure availability and proper storage of key equipment/supplies. -Maintain customer-focused attitude (internal/external). -Respond to requests in a courteous manner. -Offer assistance without being prompted. -Recognize breakdowns in customer service, reports appropriately and in a timely manner. -Order Entry (to cover for HUC meal break). -Interpret orders correctly and promptly. -Enter orders into star system accurately. -Communication, internal and external. -Answer phones and deliver messages. -Respond to Ambulance Communication Radio. -Clarify orders with RN and/or physician. -Put out calls/pages to other physicians. -Keep kitchen properly stocked. -Check expiration dates on food items. -Check refrigerator temperatures, lounge and medication room. -Stock bath areas with linens, supplies for urine samples. -Take specimens to general lab when needed. -Complete monthly cleaning schedules located on unit. -Count wheelchairs daily. -Maintains office equipment including, but not limited to, computers, telephones, refrigerator temperatures, printers, and fax machines. Submits repair requests to the appropriate departments and follows up as needed. Reports Bedboard discrepancies to Bed Flow Coordinator, or appropriate person. Establishes appropriate and effective communication strategies. Establishes professional and respectful interpersonal relationships. -Suggests and supports changes within the department. Assumes responsibility for assignments and views problems as challenges. Demonstrates awareness of how one's own behavior impacts the efficient functioning of the department. -Maintains accurate unit communication including, but not limited to, promptly answering telephones, activating the paging system, facilitating timely faxing, and distributing patient and unit mail. Greets and assists visitors, physicians and other staff members. Utilizes hospital information systems, including but not limited to eRecord, MARS, Medipac, Bedboard, and Teletracking. Updates Bedboard per unit standards and communicates changes to appropriate staff as needed. Enters and communicates physician orders timely and accurately. Maintains the medical record and patient chart according to established policy. Assures that patient identification plate is correct and that patient identification labels are available at all times. Coordinates other unit activities including, but not limited to scheduling of tests and procedures, scheduling patient transports, completing errands, maintaining appropriate logs and filing reports appropriately. -Maintains par levels for designated supplies and forms including "down time" folders. Rounds through family lounge to assure proper items are stocked and room is maintained. Reconciles charges accordingly including but not limited to custom braces and CRRT. Performs unit audits as directed. Initiates quiet time or monitors noise level. Strictly adheres to all policies and practices relative to patient care and hospital related information. Adheres to HIPAA and "blocked" policies. Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions. Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner. -Constructively receives feedback and direction. Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director. Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance. *Serves as a resource for staff and other disciplines. Serves as a preceptor for new staff members. Prior to performing new or challenging tasks, requests assistance and reviews relevant policies and procedures. Requests assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed. Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director. Participates in project and committee work. Basic Qualifications -High school diploma or equivalent. -On-the-job training in use of catheters, phlebotomy, splint application and unit orientation. -Use of monitor/keyboard to enter patient name. -Good communication skills for working with patients. -Ability to use the following equipment: restraints, monitors, oxygen equipment, pulse ox machine, suture set-ups and splinting materials. Knowledge and ability to perform catheterization procedures. -Knowledge and ability to perform phlebotomy procedures. -Knowledge of proper lifting/body mechanics used in patient care. -Basic computer ability. -Knowledge and ability to perform EKG's. -Basic arrhythmia identification. -Knowledge and sensitivity to the specific physical and developmental needs of the wide age range and diversity of patients served.
