MAJOR DUTIES:

Provides direction and leadership toward the achievement of the Trade Center’s mission, goals and objectives under the advice and support of the Columbus Iron Works Convention Trade Center Authority.

Identifies, implements and directs business strategies that ensure sound, service-oriented day-to-day management, building maintenance and operations and long-term planning consistently attracting local, regional and international conventions and meetings, and exceeding visitor expectations.

Oversees the acquisition, scheduling, and completion of all events held at the facility.

Develops, communicates and monitors policies, procedures, technology, performance standards, work productivity, and work flow to ensure efficiency, completion of work, and risk control.

Prepares and recommends annual budget for Authority approval and prudently manages Center’s resources within those budget guidelines.

Interviews, hires, trains, assigns, supervises, evaluates, and disciplines personnel.

Oversees and manages all accounts, contracts, labor and financial issues related to the Center and ensures the Authority is kept fully informed on the condition of the Center and all important factors influencing it.

Participates in various meetings in the community and region, professional forums and industry related events and training, maintains knowledge of current trends and innovations within the facility management field.

Represents the Facility to other venues, departments, clients, elected officials, outside agencies and members of the community, works closely with the Columbus Convention Visitors Bureau with their marketing efforts.

Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge and commitment to identifying, implementing and developing sustainable operation and business practices.

Knowledge of operational characteristics, services and activities of a convention center or similar facility.

Knowledge of organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs including budgetary development and management, and facility and equipment maintenance.

Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws, policies and regulations.

Excellent organizational, communication and leadership skills.

Skill in public speaking and presenting information and ideas to individuals and in group settings both internally and externally.

Ability to work effectively with computerized facility event management systems, and adapt quickly to system changes and updates.

Ability to plan, organize, direct and coordinate the work of supervisors, professionals, administrative and technical staff.

Ability to develop, implement and administer goals, objectives and procedures.

Ability to prepare and administer budgets and to allocate limited resources in a cost effective manner.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with all levels of staff, other departments, board members, elected officials and outside stakeholders.

Ability to work various hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and produce manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of business and civic leaders, elected officials, other managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Columbus Iron Works Convention and Trade Center Authority controls the management and employees of the Center according to Ord. No, 83-79, Sec. 2-124.  The Executive Director is responsible for the management of the daily operations of the Facility, and must hire and supervise all employees necessary for conducting the affairs of the Facility.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include applicable federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, governmental and department policies and procedures.  These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.  This position develops department guidelines.

COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of varied management, administrative, supervisory and technical duties.  A flat or even declining economy, staffing requirements and shortages, and revenue generation are some of the factors that contribute to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to direct the operations of the Center.  Successful performance results in a positive economic impact for the state of Georgia, citizens of Muscogee County and surrounding areas.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically co-workers, elected officials, Authority members, dignitaries, department heads, and general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, motivate personnel, provide services, and justify, negotiate, or settle matters.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear.     The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Hours of work often are outside “9 to 5” framework.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed indoors.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  This position has direct supervision over all employees of the Columbus Georgia Convention and Trade Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in business administration, public administration, marketing, hospitality, or related field, and a minimum of six (6) years of highly responsible public facility management experience, or an equivalent combination of education, experience and training that would provide the knowledge, skill and ability required for the successful performance of the essential job duties may be considered.
