Fiber Design Engineer

JOB SUMMARY: Serve as prime interface between Engineering, Sales Engineering, Construction and Operating teams. Organize, plan and design Fiber networks for residential and commercial business. Maintain a safe working environment for our teammates and customers, and be accountable for quality and productivity in the completion of all fiber architecture designs. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Fiber Network Planning, Fiber Splicing Database Creation and Maintenance, Fiber Loss Budget Planning, Fiber Network Bill of Materials, Digitize Fiber Network Maps, Inside Plant Fiber Terminations, Optical Network Documentation and Final As built Documentation in SpatialNET or AutoCAD/Splicing Documentation Database. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience. Engineer and design fiber based data, video and/or voice network design solutions that meet customer required SLAs (Service Level Agreement) in a cost effective manner. Ensure fiber network design solutions can be supported and maintained within the local network capacity and topology. Work with and manage contractors (if necessary) in the fiber design of the network solutions. Create engineering design documents/diagrams supporting the proposed solution. Maintain/update outside plant fiber network and inside plant optical network documentation. Maintain current knowledge of industry and emerging technology trends within the industry and assist in the education of the Sales Engineers on technical requirements and/or issues. Develop bill materials per project requirements. Draft outside plant fiber routes and maintain splicing database using SpatialNET, AutoCAD MAP 3D or other pre-approved drafting and splicing database applications. Use Fiber Management System to fully document Headend/Hub/OTN Inside Plant (ISP) Optics. Complete and maintain final as built documents for fiber routing, sheath sizing, slicing matrix and headend or hub fiber terminations Ensuring solution designs meet company standards and policies. Adhere to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable. Know, understand and follow company policy. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Skills/Abilities and Knowledge Ability to analyze and interpret data Ability to read, write and speak the English language to communicate with employees, customers, suppliers, in person, on the phone, and by written communication in a clear, straight-forward, and professional manner Ability to document and effectively present and explain technical solutions to the sales staff Ability to make decisions and solve problems while working under pressure Ability to manage multiple projects at one time Ability to prioritize and organize effectively Ability to show judgment and initiative and to accomplish job duties Ability to use personal computer software applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Visio, etc.) Advanced knowledge of data transport technologies including optical and HFC systems Advanced knowledge of CWDM/ DWDM wavelength configuration and management, node segmentation, fiber deep and RFoG fiber networks including sheath capacity, lambda provisioning and splice enclosure documentation in a fiber management system, including, but not limited to Spatialinfo (SpatialNET), Bentley COMMS (Fiber Module), GE Smallworld PNI and other communication system fiber management systems. Knowledge of process and project management Knowledge of general accounting and billing procedures Knowledge of company products and services Education (level and type) Bachelor?s degree in engineering, computer science, Geographical Information Systems or related field or equivalent experience Related Work Experience 5 + years HFC or Fiber Network design experience 3 + years Project Management experience 10 + years industry or telecommunications experience Certifications and/or Licenses Industry and vendor specific certifications and training a plus (HFC Design, Spatialinfo, Bentley COMMS, Lode Data or GE Smallworld, NCTI, SCTE, BCT/E) WORKING CONDITIONS: Office environment 24x7 fast paced environment Moderate Travel required
