Position Description

A Field Service Engineer is responsible for routine service, installation, and maintenance of JEOL products such as Electron Microscopes, Scanning Probe Microscopes, Ion Beam Microscopes and Electron Beam lithography instrumentation. This position involves servicing customers primarily in the Syracuse, NY area. The ideal candidate will live within 15 minutes of Syracuse, NY and be willing and able to travel to and from customer sites on a daily basis.  Occasional work in the New York City Metropolitan area may be required when necessary. The position involves interpretation of data, problem resolution and ensuring customer satisfaction. The work may include the use of manuals, guidelines, or other established procedures containing or related to highly technical matters that can be understood or interpreted only by those with advanced or specialized knowledge or skills. The Field Service Engineer represents JEOL at customer locations and works primarily with scientists and related personnel to diagnose and repair products within the assigned service territory.


Essential Functions:

· Independently diagnose and repair SEM and TEM instruments within the territory.

· Systematically analyze the source of problems affecting customer’s instrumentation.

· Resolve problems with affected instrument, or prepare a report of findings and recommendations. Refer complex problems and concerns to appropriate individuals.

· Communicate with clients, vendors, supervisors and any other persons or organizations with whom interaction is required to accomplish the work.

· The Field Service Engineer is responsible for the completion and submission of field service reports and weekly expense reports.

· Field Service Engineers must live with a geographical radius determined by the concentration of their customers.

· Must maintain courteous, professional, and effective working relationships with employees at all levels of the organzation.

· Must develop and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with clients, vendors, and/or any other representatives of external organizations.


Qualifications:

· An Associate’s degree in Electronics or an appropriate area of engineering and/or science; Exceptional combinations of education and experience may be considered.

· Previous field service experience is desired. Solid mechanical understanding; ability to analyze, evaluate, and assess complex and intricate mechanical components.

· Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply analog and digital electronics. This involves a basic understanding of troubleshooting techniques and approaches.

· Requires strong computer skills. Ability to prepare reports and other appropriate documentation.

· Ability to work well with clients and co-workers.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed at client locations, requiring the Field Engineer to travel to the client’s business by car or airplane, as appropriate. The work is performed in an office or laboratory environment where the noise level is usually very quiet to moderate.
