Finance Analyst – Corporate Development recruitment
Finance Analyst - Corporate Development / MA
Brentford - West London
The Team
The Corporate Development team, reporting to the VP of Corporate Development, comprises 9 professional staff based in London and Philadelphia plus administrative support. They manage a fast moving portfolio of projects, typically the acquisition of revenue-generating companies or brands, on behalf of the Chief Strategy Officer and other Corporate Executive Team (CET) members.
Each project is unique, typically ranging in value from a few £M to many £B and all are highly confidential as they have the potential to directly impact the share price of GSK and other companies. The projects are complex in nature, involving the participation of many different GSK functions and in most cases third parties and external advisors.
The Corporate Development team needs to work flexibly, driven by changing priorities and extremely tight deadlines set by CET members. In addition, Corporate Development reviews GSK’s major capital expenditure projects and oversees its equity portfolio of around £500m.
The Role
In this very high profile role, which can interact with CET members and other senior management at GSK, you will principally be responsible for supporting Corporate Development projects (eventually with the prospect of leading smaller deals). The role requires strong financial and evaluation skills together with a broad understanding of the company’s business and the industry in which it operates. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a “self starter” approach, an ability to deliver high quality product to tight deadlines and flexibility of response to changing business requirements are also critical to success in this role.
Key Accountabilities
- You will be required to act as a business partner to many and varied groups from all divisions of GSK and will liaise directly with senior representatives from these groups, working as part of a virtual team.
- Corporate Development projects typically involve valuation of a target company using a range of public sources, analysis of the financial impact of acquisition on GSK and the preparation of briefing documents for a CET audience.
- The projects may require the Finance Analyst to assist in Financial Due Diligence.
- Support the Directors of Corporate Development in managing their own project workload.
- Specifically, the Finance Analyst will (often under very tight time constraints) be required to build, develop and maintain very complex spreadsheet models and to present outputs clearly and in a highly professional format.
Other occasional duties may include:
(i) Review of capital expenditure CET proposals and prepare summaries for the CFO.
(ii) Preparation of valuations relating to impairment testing of goodwill, intangibles and entity carrying values.
(iii) Benchmarking against competitors.
(iv) Preparation and updating of reports on the GSK target universe and competitor products.
(v) Recommendations on corporate actions in relation to GSK’s equity investments.
(vi) Maintenance and improvement of the team’s standard business combination and other financial models.
Complexity
- The Corporate Development team works routinely with CET members and senior management from all parts of the business. These customers have high expectations and demand high quality output in short time frames.
- To build and maintain credibility you must demonstrate close attention to detail, the ability to get things right first time and excellent project management skills.
- You must respond flexibly to rapidly changing priorities and timelines and be comfortable with a high degree of organisational ambiguity.
- The ability to understand and adapt working style to suit different situations with a high level of confidentiality is also required.
Required qualifications:
- Qualified ACA / CIMA accountant
Preferred qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to use basic valuation techniques including discounted cash flow (NPV) analysis.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to gather, analyse, simplify and summarise detailed and complex information from a range of sources.
- Accuracy with strong attention to detail.
- Expert proficiency in Excel and good PowerPoint skills.
- Developing knowledge of and interest in the dynamics of the Pharmaceutical industry and what drives valuations.
- Knowledge of Unison at a Corporate level and Corporate Unison structure; able to extract Unison data via TM1.
