The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is responsible for operating monetary policy to maintain price stability, maintaining a sound and efficient financial system, meeting the currency needs of the public, as well as overseeing and operating efficient payment systems.
The Head of Financial Markets leads the Financial Markets Department which is the Reserve Bank’s interface with New Zealand’s financial markets. The role reports to the Bank’s Deputy Governor and Head of Financial Stability. The position is part of the Bank’s Senior Management Group and leads approximately 35 staff through six direct reports.
The Financial Markets Department oversees interest rate and foreign exchange markets, identifies risks and deals with financial system stress. It manages banking system liquidity through market operations that support the Bank’s broader monetary and financial stability objectives. Other accountabilities include active management of New Zealand’s official foreign reserves and implementing the Bank’s foreign exchange intervention policy. The Department also has a monitoring and research mandate with expertise in the macro-financial stability area.
To be a serious contender for this role, you will have a deep understanding of how financial markets operate, and have credibility with decision makers in major financial institutions. It is likely that you will have had senior level experience in a dealing room environment.
While in-depth exposure to domestic or international economic policy is not a prerequisite, you will need the ability to think strategically across the financial system, and the capacity to understand and contribute to monetary and financial regulatory policy issues.
Your people leadership and broader managerial capability will be critical to your success in this role. Equally, your capacity to maintain strong, professional relationships with decision makers across the financial markets, and represent the Reserve Bank effectively in a variety of local and international fora will be pivotal.
