^Fire protection engineers must be able to analyze problems and find solutions; they need creativity and the ability to work with and communicate their ideas to others. Life safety analysis work includes thorough examination of building designs before, during, and after construction. The fire protection and life safety analysis considers fire resistance, building use, water supplies, egress, and other factors. As an Fire Protection EIT for LEO A DALY, you will assist multiple teams of architects and engineers throughout facility design for private and public organizations to safeguard life and property against fire, explosion, and related hazards. You also will design and recommend materials or equipment, such as structural components protection, fire-detection equipment, alarm systems, fire extinguishing devices and systems, height/area calculations, and egress modeling and the necessary materials, equipment, and other methods for alleviation of conditions conducive to fire.
* Designs and assists in the production of documents as needed to meet project schedules. Provides Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) reviews for architectural and engineering discipline documents to identify areas of conflict with all disciplines, as well as deficiencies in design compliance.
* Works with a professional fire protection engineer to evaluate both existing building construction and tentative new building designs for identifying fire/life safety deficiencies, necessary fire prevention, protection, detection, and suppression requirements for architectural, mechanical plumbing and electrical designs, as well as design equivalency comparisons.
* Assembles and executes performance-based analysis to include computer-based and analytical fire modeling based on performance criteria established in cooperation with a professional fire protection engineer.
* Stays knowledgeable of the current National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards including the Life Safety Code (101) and national building and fire codes (Uniform, International, etc.).
* Shows an understanding of stairwell pressurization mechanical systems, atrium smoke control/evacuation mechanical systems, and high-rise building smoke control designs and control sequences for related mechanical systems.
* Provides a working knowledge of fire/smoke detection and alarm systems, including incipient stage smoke detection and alarm systems.
* Works with a professional fire protection engineer to establish basis of design for necessary fire protection systems and prepares complete specifications, technical studies and reports.
* Assembles design documents for wet pipe, dry pipe, and pre-action automatic fire sprinkler suppression systems, as well as clean agent total flooding suppression systems (FM200, FE25, Inergen, NOVEC, etc.) and fire alarm/mass notification systems.
* Performs hydraulic calculations, selects fire protection system equipment, and develops layouts for piping, heads, and nozzles.
* Participates in review meetings and construction administration project phases by processing shop drawings, responding to RFI's, and performing site visits during the construction phase.
* Coordinates with architects, interior designers, team engineers (mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil) and specialty sub-consultants. Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering
or ABET Accredited Engineering Degree in a related field plus master's studies in Fire Protection Engineering.
* Qualifications to register for, or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
* Working knowledge and experience with fire modeling software such as Fire Dynamics Simulator and Smokeview, to include the ability to input and modify complex geometries
* Working experience with AutoCAD and Revit.
* Experience in fire suppression, detection, and/or notification systems design.
* Working knowledge of model building codes (e.g. IBC) and life safety code.
* Experience in complete building plan review.
* Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
* Works well independently and as a team member.
* Strong time management and organizational skills.
* Ability to coordinate fire protection work on multiple in-depth projects simultaneously while managing daily activities.
* Software proficiency with Microsoft Office.
