Job Description Position Description The mission of the Great Lakes Science Center?s is to meet the Nation?s need for scientific information to restore, enhance, manage, and protect the living natural resources and their habitats in the Great Lakes Basin. The successful candidate will be working on a variety of research projects at LEBS associated with the restoration and protection of Great Lakes fish populations. Target species include yellow perch, white perch, walleye, white fish, lake trout, burbot, suckers, and their prey. Sample duties include: Accurately identify, measure, and enumerate fish and invertebrate samples Assist with the operation of seines, gillnets, trawls, plankton nets, water quality sondes, benthic grabs, and other aquatic sampling gears Perform necropsies of fish to obtain structures for age, diet, and histological analysis · Process a wide range of biological samples in the laboratory. These activities include: o taxonomic identification o fish stomach contents analysis o age determination from otoliths and scales o benthic sample sorting and identification of invertebrates o video and image analysis Data entry, database management, QA/QC, and routine data analysis Assist with report and manuscript preparation, including tables and figures In addition to the scientific work, the candidate will also perform crewmember duties aboard USGS Research Vessels while conducting surveys. The candidate must not be prone to debilitating sea sickness and must successfully complete the medical evaluation clearance program, in accordance with the USGS policy for crewmembers working on large research vessels. Qualifications: BS degree in biological sciences, fisheries, or related subject area. Knowledge of ecological principles and practices and the ability to collect and interpret ecological data. Experience aboard scientific research vessels is a plus.
