THE COMPANY
Standard Life Investments is one of the largest institutional investors in the UK with assets under management of over £165 billion and employing more than 180 investment professionals. It has nearly £65bn in fixed income, of which over £29bn is in credit. The Corporate Bond Funds are consistent strong performers, and it has recently added Emerging Markets Sovereign capabilities. It is an active fund manager with an investment process which focuses on identifying changes in market drivers and the key factors that create shifts in the investment environment. Credit analysts are fully involved in the investment process and have strong ties with in-house equity research.
THE POSITION
Based in Edinburgh and reporting to the Head of Product, the successful candidate will be responsible for internal and external support and promotion of the firm’s fixed income products. He/she will work in partnership with sales and investment teams to ensure that the former is ready and able to sell fixed income products to existing and prospective clients, being directly involved as necessary. He/she will agree sales marketing plans with business heads and oversee client reporting, providing written commentary as appropriate.
The successful candidate will ensure that portfolio managers are allowed to concentrate on fund management, acting as the team’s primary interface with clients and client-facing colleagues, and as a spokesperson for new and existing clients, investment consultants and, as appropriate, the press.
He/she will be expected to have a good knowledge of the portfolios and be able to communicate the investment process, strategy and performance in a positive and consistent manner. He/she will be expected to contribute to discussions on investment parameters, reporting requirements and provide specialist input to ad-hoc queries.
In a broader context, he/she will help to identify market requirements and opportunities for positioning existing and new fixed income products. He/she will also assess the viability of proposed products and processes and make recommendations for their modification. He/she will help to develop products and contribute constructively and commercially to their evolution, ensuring that there is clear, consistent internal and external communication about current and forthcoming products at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will have significant experience in a fixed income asset management business, preferably with several years’ direct fund management experience. Alternatively he/she might have worked in a related capital markets area. In either case, he/she will demonstrate specific and detailed product understanding of all fixed income products, including structured credit and derivative markets. A positive track record in sales/marketing would be of benefit.
The successful candidate should have a first class academic background, and must be an outstanding written and oral communicator. He/she will be consultative, collegial and commercial. He/she must be patient and persistent, show initiative and be a “self-starter”. He/she must be a strong team-player and fluency in one or more continental European languages would be an advantage.
