POSITION SUMMARY:

This is highly skilled technical vehicle maintenance work involving troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly and/or installation of automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components, chassis and vehicle body repairs for the bus and automotive fleet. Employee has considerable latitude for independent judgment and action within established guidelines. Employee is expected to complete assignments without close supervision and contribute to the solution of new problems. Employee reports to the Lead Mechanic or assigned Shift Supervisor. Work is reviewed through spot checks and occasional checking of results by a Lead Mechanic or Supervisor.

DUTIES:

Employee performs basic to complex maintenance work on WMATA vehicles.

Employee gains familiarity with and develops skills in the operation, maintenance and repair of WMATA vehicles and equipment.

Employee receives instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently.

Work is reviewed and verified to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by a Lead Mechanic or Garage Shift Supervisor.

Performs tasks in any of several areas of the bus maintenance activity.

Performs major repairs on all designated component parts of vehicles and analyzes and corrects those components having special or new problems.

Conducts technical diagnostics, performs major engine work, etc.

Performs all tasks in conformance with safety and maintenance practices and procedures.

Uses various types of test equipment and related specialized tools associated with job assignment.

Completes required documentation and reports for the operation and maintenance of WMATA vehicles and related components by using the proper forms and tags.

Attends on the job and formal training classes: Assists higher classified co-workers in their assignments or provides job specific training to lower classified co-workers.
Performs flame cutting and basic welding operations, brazing and soldering as required.

Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies such as securing or safeguarding WMATA vehicles and equipment, fire/life/safety, snow emergencies, etc.

Operates Authority vehicles as required. Works various hours, locations, and days as required. Maintains cleanliness of work area.

Performs tasks which may include heavy physical labor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the functions and operation of the Authority=s hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems equipment.

Thorough knowledge of troubleshooting, interpreting of maintenance manuals and schematics.

Knowledge of Authority safety and maintenance rules and regulations.

Knowledge of and ability to disassemble and reassemble systems to allow for effective replacement of malfunctioning components.

Knowledge of and ability to perform basic arc welding repairs when necessary.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to properly complete vehicle/maintenance reports and other reports as required.

Ability to analyze and correct malfunctions and technical problems with the systems, and to diagnose and resolve new problems on equipment and components.

Ability to read and interpret schematics, diagrams, operations manuals and maintenance instructions and guidelines.

Ability to utilize required test equipment. Ability to work various hours, locations, or days.

Ability to deal courteously and effectively with others.
Possess the necessary tools to accomplish the required tasks of the specific job position.

Ability to acquire the complete minimum tool requirement within ninety (90) calendar days of promotion/appointment.

Qualification Requirements

In order to be considered for employment, all applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirements. Applicants should include all relevant education and work experience on their application.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. Must satisfactorily pass all ASE required tests and required internal certification/promotion tests.

Some knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Garage Mechanic or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years. Must have one (1) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/HeavyTruck or School Bus) or for grand fathered employees pass the required type and number of internal tests.

WMATA reserves its sole and exclusive right to substitute any of the above test/certification requirements including but not limited to changes to other providers. WMATA In-House Certification Training will continue to be provided and conducted on-duty.

Experience may be considered in lieu of education if the candidate can effectively demonstrate functional/technical competence and progressive responsibility.

The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodation.

LICENSE:

Valid Commercial Drivers Learner Permit from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper Passenger, Air Brakes, and Tow Truck operations endorsements.

Must acquire a valid Commercial Drivers License with Passenger, Air Brakes and Tow Truck operations endorsements by the completion of training.

MEDICAL GROUP

Ability to complete satisfactorily the medical examination for this job and have a current WMATA medical examination card.

Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.

The selection for Maintenance and Construction positions is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to Maintenance and Construction District, System Wide (L689), Authority wide and external candidates, respectively.
