Geotechnical Laboratory Director Job in Pittsburgh 15108, Pennsylvania US
Geotechnical Testing Services, Inc. is one of Pittsburgh’s largest independent geotechnical and materials testing laboratories. We are searching for a Laboratory Director to manage our Pittsburgh office.
The primary function is to assist in planning, managing, and supervising the activities of a construction materials testing laboratory. The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the technical, operations, and management aspects of the laboratory and ensures standard soil, aggregate, concrete, asphalt, and masonry test are complete and accurate to assure their delivery in a timely fashion using proper procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Process samples received from clients and in house personnel.
2. Perform basic and advanced geotechnical laboratory testing such as triax, permeability, consolidation, and direct shear tests.
3. Trains or supervises training of lab staff.
4. Learns new and updated test methods and trains all necessary personnel in methods.
5. Responsible for making sure project deadlines are met by providing proper scheduling and organization of items to be tested.
6. Responsible to insure that technicians are performing the testing, and completing associated paperwork and computations in accordance with the Quality System Manual and applicable standards.
7. Advises technicians of project work scopes, budgets, profitability goals, chargeability goals, and monitors the same.
8. Plans workload distribution and makes schedules.
9. Evaluate staff performance and assist with recruiting and hiring.
10. Prepares laboratory reports, reviews test results for QA/QC, and approves test charges.
11. Ensures calibrations are completed at the required frequency and accurately.
12. Evaluates quality control and modifies manuals as needed.
13. Prepares for Proficiency Inspections by preparing technicians, facilitating inspections, and addressing any noted report deficiencies in a timely manner.
14. Develops a budget for the laboratory and maintains control of lab costs and purchase of supplies.
15. Orders equipment/supplies as needed and maintains equipment inventory.
16. Contribute to proposals for Construction Materials Testing and Inspection services.
17. Interacts with clients, insuring client service in accordance with company values.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises Laboratory Technicians, administrative and dispatch employees and coordinates with other supervisors to supervise Materials Testing Technicians and Inspectors. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, directing, and performing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. The candidate will maintain a clean and organized laboratory.
Skills
Excellent communication and math skills, proficiency with computers and Microsoft Word, Access and Excel, ability to conduct tests in accordance with published standards, interpret data and properly record collected information. Knowledge of soils or concrete laboratory equipment and test methods required. Working knowledge with data acquisition software is helpful.
Qualifications
Bachelors of Science (Civil Engineering preferred)
Minimum 5 years experience in an supervisory role
Supervised an office with over 15 staff members.
