Position: Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) Nurse

Hours: 1.0 FTE, Days and Evenings, 8 hour shifts, including alternate weekends
Status: Full Time Regular
JOB SUMMARY:
As a member of the provincial GEM network coordinated by the Regional Geriatric Program, the GEM Nurse is responsible for providing expert clinical resources to better serve the geriatric population in our Emergency Department (ED). As a clinical nurse specialist in geriatrics the incumbent will work collaboratively with other GEM Nurses across the Province, as well as liaising with other hospitals, the community and long-term care services in our region to build the Province’s capacity to deliver more effective emergency services for our geriatric population. All roles are essential in providing a safe and healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and others by ensuring that health and safety policies are followed.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To provide Elder Care nursing assessment services to elderly patients in the ED, with priority to patients who have the potential for discharge or referral to the community.
- To act as a resource/coach to ED staff in the assessment and management of elderly patients as well as to the community.
- To facilitate timely discharge of elderly patients from the ED and to link them to community resources, including Specialized Geriatric services (SGS).
- To communicate the Elder Care assessment findings of admitted patients to members of the receiving unit’s interdisciplinary team.
- To promote a model of best practice in Elder Care nursing and an elderly friendly philosophy of care within the ED.
- To provide best practice education to ED nursing staff.
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or equivalent required.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (BCLS).
- Minimum of 3 years of related clinical experience.
PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION:
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) required.
- Member of Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, preferred.
- Gerontological Nursing Certificate, preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters Degree in Nursing, Education or Health Administration is preferred.
- Knowledge of principles of adult education.
- Bilingualism in French/English an asset.
