About the Position

Under immediate supervision, and in accordance with schedules and periodic instruction, this position is primarily responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the campus grounds, ensuring a clean, safe and attractive learning environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Operate hand tools for area clearing, pruning, cutting, debris removal, minor irrigation repairs, and general landscape maintenance
• Maintain and operate powered equipment such as leaf blowers, push-type lawn mowers, lawn edgers, line trimmers, pole saws, and reciprocating hedge trimmers for vegetation maintenance and clean-up
• Mix, spread, or spray fertilizer, herbicides, or insecticides to promote plant growth
• Manicure, cut, remove, and clean up vegetation and debris to maintain aesthetics
• Operate utility cart, pick-up truck, power landscape equipment, and ride on sweepers/mowers to transport tools, personnel, and waste materials
• Operate, clean and inspect irrigation systems, valves, drainage, related equipment and areas to identify problems and needed repairs
• Operate radio or cellular phone for communication of urgent needs, critical information and status updates
• Respond promptly to, and assist with, urgent needs - preventing injury, damage, or further incident
• Use protective equipment, as required, for personal safety.
• Remove trash from receptacles and facility grounds

The Groundsworker must be able to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs and may include evening and weekend hours.

Education and Experience
One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work.

A valid California Driver’s License is required at time of hire for the operation of any vehicle required for this position. Must be able to complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam.

Knowledge, Skills Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods
• General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring of hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers.  Knowledge of the use and care of gardening materials, supplies, tools and equipment
• Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California
• Ability to perform strenuous physical work; mechanical aptitude and motor coordination
• Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools
• Ability to learn to operate skillfully small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment
• Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions
• Ability to interface positively with co-workers, students, staff and faculty
• Perform all work activities in a safe manner utilizing safety guidelines and equipment
• Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have commercial grounds and landscape experience including lawn edging and grooming; litter, trash and green waste removal experience; tree and shrub care experience, including pruning and tree supports; sprinkler maintenance experience; and pesticide and/or fertilizer application and/or spraying experience.
