No Security Clearance Required about security clearance definitions Position Description General Responsibilities of GNC Engineering Position: Gathers, defines and documents system level requirements and investigates actions necessary for requirements definition and flow-down improvement. Performs and documents design of Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems and guides experienced engineers in performance of the designs. Develops GNC and mathematical tools and techniques and aids in developing Technology roadmaps. Performs or directs test data analysis and documentation. Trains and coaches others. Works under minimal direction. Specific Responsibilities: Position is in Flying Qualities organization responsible for analysis and test of rotorcraft handling qualities, design of control laws and development of simulation math models. Position and job tasks require: Knowledge of aircraft flying qualities, flight dynamics, piloting control strategies and techniques, control laws, flight instrument displays, vision and cueing systems, and flight control systems; Analysis and evaluation of total air vehicle stability and control characteristics to insure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications and criteria for both piloted and unpiloted aerospace vehicles; Development of new or tailoring of existing Flying Qualities testing requirements for rotorcraft; Development and validation of both linear and nonlinear mathematical models of air vehicle and subsystem dynamics; Use of piloted simulation and flight testing, including process development, planning, data reduction techniques and interpretation of pilot comments to define handling qualities; Application of knowledge of aerospace vehicle flying qualities analysis, flight dynamics, control theory, piloting control strategies and techniques, and aircraft systems, to the design of control laws that achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, ground and air vehicle response, failure robustness, and loads considerations. Competencies General Technical + Flight Test Basic - Basic knowledge of and ability to work within flight test requirements, environment (e.g., Air Traffic Control, Air Space, Duty Day and flight test team) and coordination procedures. Preferred - Complete knowledge of and ability to work within flight test requirements, environment (e.g., Air Traffic Control, Air Space, Duty Day and flight test team) and coordination procedures. Able to integrate operations in a flight test environment. + Flight Theory Basic - Complete knowledge of theory of flight, aerodynamics, and basic meteorology. Preferred - Extensive, specialized knowledge of theory of flight, aerodynamics, and basic meteorology. + GNC Design and Integration Basic - Complete knowledge of controls, navigation and guidance methods as applied to aircraft, weapons and space vehicle design. Includes advanced education and experience with applied classical and modern control theory, system trade studies, architecture and integration, electromechanical system and equipment design and specification including management of supplier developed hardware, software and prototyping, vehicle handling and performance and pilot interfaces. Preferred - Extensive and specialized knowledge of controls, navigation and guidance methods as applied to aircraft, weapons and space vehicle design. Includes advanced education and experience with applied classical and modern control theory, system trade studies, architecture and integration, electromechanical system and equipment design and specification including management of supplier developed hardware, software and prototyping, vehicle handling and performance and pilot interfaces. + Navigation Control Analysis Basic - Complete ability to perform engineering analysis of Guidance, Navigtation, and Controls (GNC) systems using knowledge of guidance, navigation, and control theory, analysis techniques, and general knowledge of applications to aircraft, weapons, and space vehicles. Preferred - Extensive and specialized ability to perform engineering analysis of Guidance, Navigtation, and Controls (GNC) systems using knowledge of guidance, navigation, and control theory, analysis techniques, and general knowledge of applications to aircraft, weapons, and space vehicles. + Simulation and Modeling Basic - Complete knowledge and experience in application in aeromechanics and astrodynamics to simulation modeling and validation. Preferred - Extensive knowledge regarding the development of aeromechanic and astrodynamic simulation models and assessment of environmental effects for demanding applications. Basic Qualifications For Consideration Do you have experience in or taken course work in control theory and/or vehicle stability and control? Do you meet the criteria described in the Typical Education / Experience section of this requisition? Typical Education/Experience Level 3 - Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 5 or more years experience, Master's degree with 3 or more years experience or PhD degree with experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard. Level 4 - Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 9 or more years experience, Master's with 7 or more years experience or PhD with 4 or more years experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.
