Hadoop Engineer
We are looking for a Senior Engineer with an entrepreneurial passion to jumpstart PayPal's foray into "Big Data" and cutting edge Behavioral Analytics. You will be a part of the team that builds the Hadoop platform and scale it to be one of the largest.
Description and Responsibilities:
This role offers a seasoned engineer, with a blend of Hadoop internals, distributed data platforms, and data analytics skills, the opportunity to help build a talented team and significantly impact making the firm more data-centric.
- Be a true partner in defining the solutions, have and develop business acumen and bring technical perspective in furthering the product and business.
- Involved very closely with various analytical groups to provide consultation on high-level concepts and prototype coding, including Data Scientists, Risk Detection and Marketing platforms
- Estimate engineering effort; plan implementation of optimizing prototypes into production code and lead small execution teams
- Deliver clear, well-communicated and complete design documents.
- Develop exemplary and thoroughly tested code for the most challenging aspects of the product or product sub-systems
- Perform quality assurance on all new code from inception through integration, staging and production environments
- Collaborate effectively with other technology teams and architects to solve complex problems spanning their respective areas
- Ability to work in a team as well as independently and deliver on aggressive goals
- Exhibit Creativity and resourcefulness at problem solving while collaborating and working effectively with best in class designers, engineers of different technical backgrounds, architects and product managers
- Establish PayPal's practice and involvement in contributing to the Hadoop community
This is a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new platform team that will experience massive growth in the near term to support the growing business needs.
Requirements:
The successful candidate should have 5+ years experience in large-scale software development, with at least 3 years in Hadoop. Have a strong cross-functional technical background, excellent written/oral communication skills, and a willingness and capacity to expand their leadership and technical skills. Ability to interface with multiple diverse stakeholders and an appreciation for working in an Operations environment is required. The candidate should be able to take initiative and work independently; however, collaboration as part of a uniquely qualified team is required.
- Demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills, particularly those that apply to a "Big Data" environment
- Deep understanding and related experience with Hadoop internals, HBase, Hive, Pig and Map/Reduce
- Deep understanding of schedulers, workload management, availability, scalability and distributed data platforms
- Ability to contribute to multiple projects/demands simultaneously
- Excellent communication skills, particularly those relating to complex findings and presenting them to ensure audience appeal at various levels of the organization
- Ability to integrate research and best practices into problem avoidance and continuous improvement
- Ability to work in a fast paced, test-driven collaborative and iterative programming environment
- Exercise independent judgment in methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results
- Extensive experience building and designing large-scale distributed applications
- Expert knowledge developing and debugging in Java/J2EE
- Proven experience in Object Oriented Design and Development
- Sound knowledge of Relational Databases (RDBMS), SQL No-SQL databases
- Experience with agile/scrum methodologies to iterate quickly on product changes, developing user stories and working through backlogs
- Be customer service oriented
- Be open minded and solution oriented
- Be extremely knowledgeable of industry standards and trends
- Familiarity with Teradata and ETL tools is a plus
