Head of Conduct Risk – Business Services

The Business Services division of this major international bank employs 29000 people globally and has a range of activities that covers everything from payments, to group operations, technology and security. The division processes an extraordinary amount of financial transactions every day across every aspect of the bank’s operations and works hard to ensure customers are treated fairly. 

As Head of Conduct Risk, you will have the ability to continuously take a helicopter view over the Business Services division and then drop down as and when you identify a problem – hopefully before it escalates into an issue. This means finding a special individual who has experience operating on an industrial scale.

Based in London or Edinburgh, you will report directly to the Head of Compliance for Business Services and play a key role within the oversight of the Chief Risk Officer. The role is highly visible within the organisation and as this is a relatively new area of expertise, the opportunity to build a Conduct Risk specialist team is before you.

Key responsibilities include:

• Delivery and maintenance of the operating framework and standards for compliance risks, including launching the Conduct Risk agenda in relation to relevant Conduct Risk Policies within Business Services.
• Divisional leadership of the Group’s approach to risk management processes relating to the oversight of conduct risk management and capability across the Business Services hubs.
• Developing a proactive communication and engagement strategy with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the nature and scale of conduct risks and approach to resolution of them is understood, suitably challenged and agreed.
• Focusing on the continued assessment and upgrade of the Divisional Compliance.
• Identification and management of emerging regulatory risks facing the division.
• Maintenance of a key executive relationship within Group Operations, Business Services, providing both support and challenge from a wide Risk remit, with key support provided by Operational Risk for Operational Risk themes.
• Support the divisional CF10 in the delivery of Business Services regulatory responsibilities. Deputising as appropriate.

The purpose of the role is:
• Proactively assess the inherent material risks (of a highly complex business/organisation across multiple jurisdictions that executes many of the groups supporting processes), mitigating controls and residual risks. This will involve analysing the business risk profile and seek confirmation that the risks are being appropriately identified, assessed and mitigated to the desired level (Risk Appetite).
• Establish and deploy robust risk and control frameworks which meet the strategic needs of the Group including communication, training and awareness.
• Provide expert support and advice to the business on risk management. This includes interpreting and complying with the risk policy standards and risk management framework.
• Accountable for ensuring that the Divisional Conduct Risk team has the appropriate resources and capabilities required to deliver against the delegated responsibilities and providing Leadership to the team and wider Business Services arena.

The successful candidate will have the following qualities:

• Obvious and natural leadership qualities
• In depth knowledge of regulatory conduct agenda in UK and of global regulatory trends.
• In depth knowledge of regulatory perspective honed from working directly with major regulators or successful past close engagement.
• Depth of technical expertise across all relevant business lines and applicable policy chapters
• Technical SME knowledge of Business Services operational, technology or specialist processing in Delivery functions or similar industry experience.
• An understanding of key Operational Risk tools, themes and priorities.
