Head of Facilities and Services

The Head of Facilities and Services will lead Novartis' Cambridge Facilities and Services organization with responsibility for over 1M square feet of owned and leased properties and an annual budget of $92M, ensuring (1) comprehensive, cost effective engineering services and facilities operations to ensure optimal operations of Novartis owned and leased facilities and (2) a broad portfolio of high quality, cost effective campus and lab services to Novartis Cambridge tenants (primarily scientific associates in several divisions of the company).
Specific responsibilities:
* Establish a compelling vision for Facilities and Services, identifying gaps between the current state and the vision and the series of strategic and tactical activities required to close that gap
* Meet periodically with key stakeholders and customers (including at other Novartis Divisions) to develop customer relationships and assess and modify customer-facing processes (targeting simplicity, optimal allocation of resources, priority, efficiency, and high standards of service)
* Chair Cambridge Space Resources Committee, which is responsible for campus space planning and utilization
* Develop comprehensive dashboards and track team performance against stretched targets
* Coordinate closely with internal compliance and external regulatory organizations to ensure fully compliant facilities and to reflect compliance standards in new projects. Compliance groups include Health, Safety and Environment and Animal Welfare.
* Lead engineering and facility operations team for Novartis’ Cambridge campus (comprised of several owned and leased lab and office buildings)
* Develop capital investment priorities and ensure budget availability for critical investment and maintenance projects
* Build a comprehensive asset management program, targeting central provision of services to maintain and extend asset lifecycles (building and lab assets)
* Conduct annual strategic review of critical services required (or anticipated to be required based on scientific priorities and direction) and how to most cost effectively provide such services, including conducting a make/buy assessment
* Lead services team to ensure services portfolio is at the highest standards of efficiency, responsiveness, customer service, and cost effectiveness.
* Manage contract lifecycle with outsourced service providers, pursuing continuity, cost effectiveness, and high quality services
* Provide design input to the $600M campus expansion project and prepare for the operations of the new campus upon completion.
Required experience:
* BS or MS degree in business, physical sciences and/or engineering or equivalent experience
* Professional Engineering certification a plus
* MBA a plus
* 7-10 years of managing engineering services, facility operations, campus and/or laboratory services in the pharmaceuticals or biotechnology arenas
* Deep understanding of facilities and discovery research
Required competencies:
