Role Summary :
GRG’s prime function is to undertake positive and active management of the Bank’s problem lending portfolio. The Division seeks to add value to exposure management with the aim of returning accounts to the originating Group Business Unit / Subsidiary in a “satisfactory” condition, maximise debt recoveries and obtain levels of reward commensurate with the risks undertaken.
The purpose of this role is:
- To lead the GRG Ireland Finance team and ensure that it operates a strong control environment, identifies and manages risk appropriately, and delivers key strategic and tactical initiatives.
- Act as a Business Partner to the Head of GRG Ireland and work closely with the rest of his management team to ensure that the business is well supported from a Finance perspective.
- This role reports to the CFO of Ulster Bank, with a dotted line into the Deputy CFO of GRG. The individual will be responsible for leading, developing and motivating a team of 3-4 direct reports and a further 15-20 indirect reports.
Key responsibilities:
- As Head of Finance, accountable for the management and reporting of a £19bn loan book generating £250m in annual income, £100m in costs and £2bn in annual impairment charge (2011 numbers)
- Act as a key member of the GRG Ireland Leadership Team, working closely with other Leadership Team members in a spirit of mutual trust, understanding and support. Advocate a “one team” mentality across Finance and across GRG as a whole
- Work closely with the central GRG Finance team to ensure consistent policies, processes and governance is maintained across the GRG business
- Overall responsibility and control for managing the Provisions and Impairment process for the GRG Ireland Book
- Responsible for the planning, budgeting and target setting process for GRG Ireland
- Drive MI improvements and enhancements on the GRG Ireland portfolio to assist the business in making strategic decisions as well as feed into the Global GRG MI
- Responsibility for the delivery of Board packs to Executive and senior business Heads.
- Provide support and work closely with the WR Property business on all transactions
- Ensure the team operate in a strong financial control environment
- Responsible for the valuation process around the GRG investments and property portfolio
- Own various control sign offs (statutory reporting, SOX etc)
- Lead the capital reporting and efficiency programmes for GRG
- Demonstrate ability in preparing high quality reviews, including attendance and delivery of presentations at appropriate governance forums
- Engage and work with Executives and Senior Management across the Group, managing and balancing a number of conflicting agendas, maximising resources and prioritising activities as required
- Liaison with key stakeholders such as the Non Core division, Group Credit Risk, the Capital team and Group Finance.
- Engage with internal and external auditors
- Manage and assess the needs and development of individuals within the team and assist in their personal and professional development through effective implementation of training and development programmes.
- Proven ability to generate team commitment through coaching, empowerment encouragement of direct reports

Experience:
- Qualified ACA / ACCA / CIMA as well as strong academic qualifications
- Significant and robust experience working at a Senior level within the financial services industry together with knowledge of regulations, both internal and external which impact the business.
- Strong commercial acumen
- Experience of financial control and governance
- Understanding of capital and its application in business
- Proven track record of delivery and achievements in the financial services industry
- Credible individual who is comfortable dealing with and facing challenge from senior executives
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and team / people management ability including building a culture of high performance across the Finance Team and wider business.
- Strong understanding and practical experience of the various process and practices prevalent in a banking environment
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with key business areas across Ulster Bank and the wider RBSG. This includes the management of strong cross functional and cross divisional relationships
- Proven ability to communicate effectively and meet challenging deadlines (prioritising where appropriate). Ability to appreciate the “bigger picture” and to think around the issue when identifying experience
