Key Responsibilities
Individual
• Finance Department Management
- Ensure the integrity of the overall control environment in the finance team.
- Ensure that Beazley maintains appropriate and effective Syndicate and Group accounting systems.
- Monitor and control the application of financial accounting procedures for the Syndicate and Group to ensure that they comply with management and financial accounting standards and requirements.
o Responsible for operating, monitoring and reporting the status of controls and to liaise with Risk Management in reporting and escalating significant control failings/weaknesses or events that may arise.
o Manage financial projects.
- Strategy
- Define and implement the blueprint for the operation of the finance function across Beazley globally. Drive a continuous improvement and efficiency culture across the whole team.
- Review, in conjunction with the Group FD, the strategic actions and business plans for the finance department, and communicate key issues to the finance team as appropriate.
- Identify issues, develop solutions and provide specialist financial and commercial advice and evaluation across the business in support of business needs.
- Group activities
- Manage Beazley’s commercial bank relationships.
- Participate in Corporate Projects as required.
• Leadership/Team Management
- Ensure the effective recruitment, retention, development and progression of finance staff to anticipate and meet current and future needs.
- Ensure that staff have terms of reference setting out their responsibilities and reporting lines.
- Ensure that all employees have the knowledge and the skills and competencies necessary to perform effectively in their given roles and responsibilities.
- Discipline within Beazley Group guidelines members of staff contravening regulations per ‘handbook’ or underwriting guidelines as required.
The Finance Team
• Delivery of business as usual finance, including:
- Any reporting required to satisfy regulatory authorities; ensure monthly and quarterly financial information are accurate and produced efficiently in line with the Syndicate’s accounting timetable.
- Preparation, review and analysis of Syndicate and Group management accounts on YOA and GAAP basis.
- The completion of the corporation tax return.
- Co-ordination of budgets and forecasts for the Syndicate and Group on YOA and GAAP basis.
- Running an expense budgeting and monitoring process to ensure group resources are directed to strategic priorities efficiently and with appropriate governance. Challenging all areas of the business on their process improvement and efficiency initiatives.
- Review and monitor production of Group accounts.
- Ensure Lloyd’s, FSA and Company Accounts requirements are met in respect of Syndicate and Group Accounts.
- Production of management accounts on a monthly basis.
- Provide information for investors and external bodies directly and for the FD and the Board.
- Prepare with commentary all finance department and Board exhibits.
- Monitor working capital for Syndicate and Group.
- Monitor investment performance.
- Liaise with subcontractors and outsourced service providers, review and monitor their performance.
Personal Specification:
Education and Qualifications
• University degree in any discipline
• Professional accountancy qualification, preference for ACA
Skills and Abilities
• General commercial and financial knowledge
• Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
• Able to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing
• Motivational skills, team worker as well as able to work on own initiative
• Proven leadership/management experience
• Strong understanding of the various functions within the finance team
• Computer skills – good working knowledge of MS Office and advanced Excel
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail
• Good accountancy skills
• The ability to manage time, meet deadlines and prioritise
• Ability to negotiate
• Ability to produce meaningful financial information
Knowledge and Experience
• Extensive post qualification experience, ideally in insurance industry. Experience in another financial services environment would be advantageous
• Experience of leading operational finance activities and finance IT implementations
• Experience in legal and regulatory responsibilities
• Proven successful leadership/management experience
