Head of Legal

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a charitably funded genomics research institute located close to Cambridge. We played a leading role in the Human Genome Project and are now focused on understanding the role of genetic variation in health and disease. Drawing on the unique expertise of our academic Faculty and harnessing the capability of our large scale technology platforms, we are leading international efforts to understand the biology of genomes with the aim of generating outcomes that can be translated into diagnostics, treatments or therapies that reduce global health burdens.

The continuing growth and evolution of the institute since its inception in 1993 to its current position as a 900 strong global leader in genomic research has led to the requirement for a senior experienced lawyer to head up an in-house legal team which will provide expert advice and support across a broad spectrum of activity.

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services and with a dotted line to the General Counsel of the Wellcome Trust (the Institute's primary funder), the role will influence organizational decision-making at a high level, providing strategic and commercial advice and identifying and managing legal risk. The remit will be varied and wide-ranging covering general business, financial, charity, governance, commercial contracts, regulatory and compliance, IP, spin out company set up, commercialization of discoveries etc. As well as leading the in-house team, the role will work in partnership with external legal advisors on specific projects and initiatives.

The role requires an experiencedUKqualified lawyer with strong leadership skills and business acumen combined with substantial experience of applying legal expertise to a range of business and legal problems. You will have had significant exposure to a scientific environment, research or pharma/biotech, with the ability to work well with a cross section of people from scientists and academics to finance and administrative professionals. Key to this will be the ability to effectively convey legal concepts to non-lawyers and to give sound and practical advice which strikes an appropriate balance between risk and benefit.
