Role Summary/Purpose
As a Heat Treatment Lead Specialist you will work with scientists to define and conduct heat treatment experiments in vacuum furnaces, retort furnaces, and other specialized thermal treatment equipment.
Essential Responsibilities
Works with customers to establish heat treatment requirements; coordinates processing schedules; conducts heat treatments using vacuum, retort, and box furnaces; operates forging and pressing equipment with guidance from processing engineer; works with maintenance teams to care for and upgrade equipment.
You will: • Support project teams and individual scientists to define heat treatment processes appropriate to achieving microstructural or property targets. • Setup heat treatment furnaces using programmable furnace controllers. • Schedule and run heat treatments to meet customer delivery dates. • Analyze the heat treatment results, including data reduction and sample analysis to identify trends and and anomalies. • Stay technically current with the state of the art in materials testing.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical field with at least three years’ experience in thermomechanical or thermal processing of metals and/or ceramics –or— an Associate’s degree in a technical field with at least five years’ experience.
- At least 2 years’ of hands-on in heat treatment of metals or ceramics.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
- Must be willing to take a drug test and submit to a background investigation as part of the selection process.
- Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics
- Five of more years of experience in the Heat treatment of superalloys, lightweight metals, ceramics, or composite materials.
- Experience in the design of thermal treatment campaigns used to establish process-structure-property relationships.
- Experience in programming of furnace controllers.
- Experience in heat treatment with inert or hydrogen gas.
- Experience in operation of hot isostatic and cold isostatic pressing systems.
- Experience with the maintenance of vacuum furnaces and associated equipment.
- Strong analytical skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
