Two of the larger research groups are hiring for software engineers. While the profile of individual that they are looking for is similar, the type of work does differ significantly.

One group is focused solely of very high frequency trading. In this world, there is a huge amount collaboration between software, hardware, network teams who work in conjunction in order to exploit very short term opportunities in global electronic markets. There is a huge amount of focus on speed and latency. The group is at the cutting edge of computerised finance and has produced a 5 new millionaires in the last 3 months.

The other group also is a massive user of complex software, but their problems are different. They also seek to exploit opportunities in worldwide financial markets, but do so in a different way. This group is heavily focused on massive data-sets and extraction of trends from this data. They work with huge amount of data and problems relate to normalisation, working with and storing huge amount of real-time and historical data, machine learning and creation of algorithms to exploit perceived trends. Software engineers work closely with Statisticians, Quantitative Analysts in order to create models and software that work in tandem to make money on a number of worldwide markets.

As well as the broad skills mentioned above (algorithm design etc), knowledge of C, C++ or Java is required, knowledge of databases and RDBMS theory is also advantageous.
