Hedge Fund – SQL Server Developer DBA recruitment

The database team is responsible for 100+ instances of SQL server in Production, Development and DR Environments accross global offices.

Areas of responsibility will include maintaining and supporting the various environments, performance analysis and tuning of servers and code, monitoring the status of servers and tasks, and responding to issues and requests from business users. The team is also expected to provide advice and guidance for technical and non-technical staff, so good communication skills are essential.

There is a strong on-going emphasis on task automation, so experience in automating administrative tasks to reduce the amount of support work is required. At Marshall Wace, we expect innovation and idea generation within all of IT roles. To this extent, the candidate will be involved in designing databases and giving guidance to developers on best practice for both performance and usability and have direct influence and accountability in the development process. The candidate should be comfortable working in both a team environment and independently. We expect that when necessary, projects requiring database expertise can be run by the candidate with little oversight from the business and minimal oversight on the implementation once the design is signed off. This will require that the candidate is able to pick up both business and system knowledge rapidly to in our fast-paced environment. The individual should be a highly motivated self-starter and someone who has great pride in their work and in the timeliness of their delivery.

We are looking for someone who will be flexible in their approach to dealing with different situations and business users, as well as challenging current practices. They will need to be responsive to current issues, and pro-active in developing and improving existing systems and processes.

The individual should be able to work and co-ordinate their activities with colleagues and be able to relate technical issues to developers as well as non-technical business users. We are also looking for good analytical and problem solving skills.

Detailed Position Requirements

Key Technical skills:
• Detailed knowledge of SQL Server 2005 2008 R2 database engine
• Very strong T-SQL skills
• Experience with all aspects of Database Administration for MSSQL Server.
• Experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization using the SQL toolset.
• Good working knowledge of High Availability and Disaster Recovery options within SQL Server.
• Scripting and Programming languages such as Powershell, C#, VB
• Experience with Replication, both configuration and troubleshooting.
• Good communication and writing skills

Preferable further skill areas:
• SQL Reporting Services
• Data Warehousing
• Experience with Dell Equallogic storage solutions
• Red Gate SQL Tools
• Knowledge of Networking and infrastructure
• Experience with Virtualization
