HGV Driver Job in Northampton, Midlands UK

We are looking for 10 x HGV class 1 or 2 drivers for a new and exciting contract that has arisen across three counties – Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Northamptonshire. Although candidates require a valid and up to date HGV license, this isn’t just a driving position. You will be working as part of an ‘Emergency Fire Crew’.

When training is completed, you will be on a casual four year contract of deployment. During busy periods where the services are coming under pressure and extra bodies are required, you will be deployed to a location within one of the counties Oxfordshire, Berkshire or Northamptonshire. You will be driving a HGV vehicle but also completing the duties listed below in assisting the Fire Crew. It is important to say that candidates applying for this position will not be in the line of fire and will not be in any danger. We are not looking for fully qualified fire staff. We are looking for candidates who can assist the crews and drive the HGVs.

Training?

Training is 2 weeks over 10 days at our clients offices in Moreton in Marsh, Glos. You will be trained by fully qualified and experienced fire training staff. All food and accommodation will be provided. Following successful completion of the course you will be eligible for deployment.

Pay?

Subject to confirmation you will be paid for all training at £9.50 per hour for training, usually at 10 hrs per day. Deployment rate is significant and you will be paid at £20.00 per hour. It is envisaged that deployments will be 24 hours in duration and ‘stag’ shift system will be used when deployed.

Physical ability

1.1 Personnel must have the physical ability to carry out the fire-fighters role, including adequate stamina and strength. In particular:

Movement

i. Be able to run, jog and walk

1.2 Personnel must be able to complete the following physical tasks and may be tested to assess physical competence, confidence and ability to follow instructions.

Ladder Climb

This is a physical test of confidence and the ability to follow instructions. Personnel must be able to ascend a 13.5 metre (45 foot) Fire and Rescue Service type ladder to a point two thirds the full working height, take a leg lock and remove their hands from the ladder and look down to an assessor to identify symbol placed flat on the ground at the foot of the ladder. The test will need to be completed in 180 seconds.

Casualty Evacuation

This is a physical test of upper and lower body strength and co-ordination. A 55Kg (8 ½ stone) dummy is dragged backwards around a 30 metre (100 foot) course of four cones. The test will need to be completed in 45 seconds.

Ladder Lift

This is a physical test of upper and lower body strength and co-ordination. The bar of a ladder lift simulator weighing 30Kg (4 ½ stone) is to be raised to a height of 182 cm (6 foot).

Enclosed Space

This is a test of confidence, agility and identification of claustrophobic tendencies. Personnel must be able to wear a breathing apparatus face mask and negotiate a crawl and walkway with clear vision. Half way through the route, with their vision obscured, they must be able to retrace their steps to the start / finish point. The test will need to be completed within 5 minutes

Equipment Assembly

This is a physical test of manual dexterity. Personnel must assemble then disassemble a fire service type portable pump following a demonstration. The test will need to be completed in 5 minutes and 10 seconds.

Equipment Carry

This is a physical test of aerobic fitness, stamina, upper and lower body strength and co-ordination. Personnel will need to carry items of equipment over a 25 metre (82 foot) course around two cones. This is not a test of memory as personnel can be reminded of the sequence of events. The equipment will consist of one 30 metre (100 foot) length of fire service hose reel tubing on a drum, two coiled 25 metre (82 foot) lengths of fire service 70mm diameter hose, one 100mm fire service hard suction hose and suction strainer in a basket and one 33Kg (5 stone) barbell. Personnel must complete the exercise in 5 minutes and 50 seconds

2.2 Personnel must be able to read and understand information written in English.

2.3 Personnel must be able to understand and work with numerical information.

2.4 Personnel must be able to ensure the safety of themselves and others by using situational information likely to be presented whilst performing firefighting duties in deciding how best to respond to situations.

2.5 All personnel must be clean shaven during any period of employment with the Authority to allow for the safe wearing of breathing apparatus.
