HIM Coder/Abstractor Job in Murrells Inlet 29576, South Carolina US

The Health Information Department Coder/ Abstractor is responsible to analyze and assign ICD-9-CM and eventually ICD-10 diagnostic and procedure codes and CPT and HCPCS codes to patient cases for Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance reimbursement/payments based on medical information provided and consistent with regulatory guidance and best practices in the industry and GHS policy and procedure. Abstract key data requires from the medical information consistent with UHDDS requirements, other regulatory and best practices.  The Coder will meet specified productivity and accuracy standards and complete other HIM duties as assigned.

 

Experience:

-         Previous Experience as healthcare coder preferred

-         Prior experience coding as part of a hospital system preferred.

 

Education:

High school Diploma Required.

-  Post secondary education preferred 

 

Licensure/Certification/ registrations:

Candidates must meet one One of the following criteria:

o       Currently credentialed as an RHIA

o       Currently credentialed as RHIT

o       Currently credentialed as CPC (Certified Professional Coder)

o       Currently credentialed as CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)

o       Must be eligible to take and must possess certification of having passed a RHIA or RHIT exam within 18 months of GHS hire date at individuals own expense.

o       Must be eligible to take and must possess certification of having passed a CCS or CPC exam within 18 months of GHS hire date at individuals own expense..

o       Must take and must pass a national coding certification exam of equivalent and comparable nature to the RHIA, RHIT CCS or CPC within 18 months of GHS hire date at individuals own expense.  “equivalent and comparable” nature is strictly determined by the Department Director and must be preapproved prior to beginning trek.

Special Skills: 

-         Prior experience with Meditech preferred

-         Familiar with Microsoft Office Programs such as Outlook, WORD, EXCEL and POWER POINT preferred.

-         Strong PC skills required.

 

Physical Requirements:  Light-Medium Physical Agility Test Rating (PAT)  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) required to stand, sit, and walk; frequently to use hands, fingers; and frequently to talk or hear. The employee must exert 15 to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 5 to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 5 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
