Preparing and staining microscopic slides for subsequent evaluation by the pathologist. Identifying tissue, their functions and structures both macroscopically and microscopically. Assisting during surgical pathology consultation by preparing frozen tissue sections. Imagine Yourself... Ensuring that specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing. Entering and verifying test requests into the laboratory computer system. Processing tissue using automated processors to ensure full preservation and infiltration by paraffin. Embeding tissue into paraffin blocks. Maintaining a filing system for paraffin tissue blocks, slides and wet tissue. Cuting quality sections of slides with proper thickness as determined by tissue type and places properly on glass slides. Performing staining, cover slipping, and distribution of slides. Testing and validating new methods, procedures, and instruments. Assisting pathologist during frozen section procedure. Preparing specimens for sending out to reference laboratories, according to protocols. Performing and documenting cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of instruments and equipment. Performing and documenting quality control. Evaluating quality control results and taking corrective action when indicated. Providing general direction or technical assistance to pathologists, externs, other staff, and support personnel. Ensuring compliance with all accrediting agency standards.
