Job Purpose:
Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures.
Duties:
* Collects specimens by making rounds to pick up surgical specimens; checking specimens for criteria of acceptability; assuring proper patient identification; specimen integrity; assigning identification numbers; logging specimens.
* Prepares tissue specimens by treating tissue with chemicals, slicing, and mounting on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.
* Helps pathologist with tissue grossing procedures by preparing the tissue grossing area with appropriate materials and instruments; maintaining and assuring specimen identification by labeling cassettes; maintaining workflow in concert with the pathologist.
* Prepares slides by processing, embeding, and sectioning tissue; using tissue processing instrumentation, routine and special stains, frozen-section instrumentation. Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin and Eosin staining.
* Documents actions by completing forms, reports, logs, and records.
* Maintains asepsis by cleaning the workstation at the completion of grossing procedures; observing health safety protocols.
* Maintains equipment, instrumentation, and solutions by performing preventive maintenance and quality-control procedures; recording temperatures on various instruments; changing processor; changing staining solutions.
* Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organizations.
* Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.
* Maintains quality results by following standards.
* Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
* Maintains legal and accreditation compliance by developing policy positions concerning federal, state, and local regulations, and jacho standards; anticipating emerging issues.
