SUMMARY (BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB)

Performs histology procedures (routine and specialized) on fresh and fixed tissue samples in conformance with laboratory, state and national policies/standards. Assumes responsibility for training, quality control, and instrument and equipment maintenance.

SUMMARY (ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES)

1. Performs complex and varied histology procedures that result in the creation of viable microscope slides. This includes proper embedding of tissue, paraffin sections/microtomy and routine, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescent techniques.

2. Serves as a resource for troubleshooting technical issues.

3. Verifies and documents appropriately stained controls.

4. Verifies and documents matching of blocks, paperwork and slides.

5. Recognizes factors that affect procedures and results and takes appropriate action within pre-determined limits when corrections are indicated.

6. Identifies abnormal results and quality control parameters, appropriately takes action and alerts Technical Specialist or Manager.

7. Oversees and performs safe operation and maintenance of lab instrumentation, maintenance of records and documentation required to manage the daily workflow and provide QC/QA monitors.

8. Mentors Residents, new employees and Histotechnicians under the direction of the Technical Specialist in basic laboratory techniques.

9. Performs daily duties to maintain a neat, orderly and clean work space/department.

10. Maintains laboratory supplies and reagents.

11. Participates in and facilitates continuing education modalities. Supports the philosophies of the service excellence program.

12. Adheres to hospital and departmental policies.

13. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university. Certified as a Histotechnologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist, HTL (ASCP) or eligible certification completed within 18 months of employment.

Job Knowledge/Skills: Understands histologic methods, recognizes problems and initiate corrective action. Proficient in the use of the appropriate equipment. Understands the importance of accuracy and reliability in the performance of histologic techniques.
