HOSPITAL PROCEDURE CODING SPECIALIST

 

JOB TITLE: Hospital Procedure Coding Specialist

 

REPORTS TO: Director - Business Operations

 

JOB CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

 

GENERAL DUTIES: Apply appropriate code designation, per the current manuals to physician services, ensuring established compliance criteria is met.

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to perform general office duties.

1.      Obtain hospital charge sheets.

 

2.      Review procedures and reports along with physician charge sheets.

 

3.      Verify procedures via hospital clinical data base.

 

4.      Coordinate with demographics person to update/enter patient demographic information for all hospital procedures.

 

5.      Code all surgical procedures from dictated reports and hospital charge sheets.

 

6.      Code all diagnostic procedures with appropriate diagnosis.

 

7.      Enter all coded hospital charges.

 

8.      Keep abreast of changes in regulations and apprise management and physicians.

 

9.      Perform additional duties as needed.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

·         Knowledge of business office procedures.

·         Knowledge of either insurance or related healthcare billing.

·         Skill in operating a computer and general office machines.

 

EDUCATION:

·         High school diploma or equivalent.

·         Coding certification preferred.

 

 

EXPERIENCE:

·         Two years experience in physician or related healthcare setting.

·         Two years experience coding specific to diagnosis (ICD-9) and procedures (CPT HCPCs).

·         Familiarity with Cardiology preferred.
